I'm a sophomore in college,19 years old. I live in Memphis and my father lives in Chicago. My mom is a drug addict and my aunt makes minimum wage and she takes care of me and my 2 younger sisters. I work 3 jobs and I am full time student(workstudy as a office asst., fast food and a telemarketing job on weekends).
My dad owns a barber shop in Chicago and the only thing he has done for me was send a $100 money order in Dec of 2004.
I heard cuz Im in college I can still qualify for child support.
I wanted to know:
1)Tho Im 19 can I put him on child support.
2)Will I need to have my mom involved with this
3)Where do I begin

Thanks everone
but this message is directly for the user JON:
I don't belive no one else is responsible for me,It that is the case, I would be holding down 3 jobs to pay 4 skool and still remain full time.
Maybe Im silly but I do feel that a my FATHER is supposed to be responsible for me.
When u fill out student loan papers they still require ur parents information becuase if u are inskool u are considered their responisbility.

Sorry to hear about your Mom and Dad not helping and the circumstances but while you seem to be in a difficult situation, I am very impressed with your ability to take care of yourself - you may be eligble for owed childsupport.

Good luck!

Hmm...I think the situation depends. If you weren't in college, then when your 18, the support for you would cease. If you have minor siblings, then he should be paying support for them.

Sometimes they make the father pay all through college. But you'd have to go to your local courthouse or call legal aid what the laws are in your state. You could do it on your own, but it might be better if your aunt could help you with this endeavor.

I do appluad you for your hard work and your full effort! Holding 3 jobs and tackling full time spot in college is a lot to handle. Go you for trying to make the best of a tough situation!! :-)

Good Luck!

If your dad was supposed to be paying child support or was paying child support a few months before you turn 18 your mother would have received documentation asking if you would be attending any institution for higher learning. If she said yes then they would continue to seek support for you. If she didn't then its too late, however, your mother can seek back support for you. I saw a case like this on Judge Judy where some young ladies tried to sue their dad for back support but Judge Judy told them their mother had to do it. I am 38 and my dad wasn't stable with paying child support and last year when he started getting disability checks about 3 months later the attorney general of West Virginia began docking his checks for $125 for back support for me and my sister. She is 37. I think this is ridiculous but they have to do it. We don't want or need his money and haven't seen a penny til this day. I think since my mother had to go on welfare for a while the state is taking that money. My sister and I have been living in Texas for 20yrs and wondered why West Virginia attorney general would be interested in taking money from a 65yr old man.

You have grown up with the myth that someone else is responsible for your welfare after age 18. It is just that, a myth. There are tons of grants and loans available to full time students. Touch base with your student aid office on campus. As unlikely as it sounds, most scholarships go unclaimed because they are very narrow in their qualifications and scope, but if you look hard, you will probably find one aimed specifically at you.

Look for money from those willing to give it.

Nope. I don't think so. You are over 18 so I think its beyond that. Plus, if he isn't willing to help then why would he do that anyway. He would probably just find a way to avoid it. My advice would be to check into student loans. The govt offers a few good ones and you can try for private ones too. This would help with school plus expenses. You wouldn't have to pay any money back until you're out of school.

You need to talk to the Department of Human Services, BUT i heard that also if you are in school, you can still get child support. Does your father want to be in your life? Does he talk to you? Maybe the two of you can work something out before you make the decision to put him on child support.

Yes. Put your father on child support. Send him $400 each month so you can help take care of him. You are a good daughter. Bless you.
