Why hasn't 9/11 been made an offical day of national remembrance like Memorial day, Martin Luther King Day etc?

I think it should be, terrorists won't bomb just because we make it a national holiday, it's already sort of a non offical national day of remembrance, and they have not bombed yet.

It's too soon, and is a raw subject. Especially now. How do you compare the lives lost at the WTC to those lost in New Orleans? These are the kinds of questions that are being asked.

On the other hand, it possibly sends a message to those attacking us we will not forget those lost in acts of war (and 9-11 WAS an act of war).

I actually think it is a good idea, but will people actually remember over time? Someone asked me one December 7th if I knew what day it was, can you guess what I absent-mindedly said?

Teusday.
I don't even remember if I knew what the day of the month it was. If I had realized it was December 7th I would have eventually said Pearl Harbor Day. The point is, unfortunately, is that things get forgotten or lose importance over time.

Well the Mormons massacred New York settelers going to California in Utah. And that never had a day of remembreance either.

I think it should be made an official day of remembrance, and no, it would not be a reminder of terrorism (as someone else just noted), but reminder that many innocent American lives were lost that day. I agree that most of those people who died in WTC are not heroes, they were at the wrong place in the wrong time, but those who tried to rescue others and lost their lives are-- firefighters, police... We should remember this day not because many heroes died but because it marks another point in American history. Can you think of how many aspects of your and this country's lives changed since the attack?

Why do we need a day to remind us of terrorism? I am sorry, but the people that died in 9/11 were not hero's, they were people in the wrong spot on the wrong day. If the firemen and police would have know the towers were going to implode they would not have been in them trying to put out the fires and rescue people. If you or I had been killed at out place of work, do you think our families would have received 2 million dollars and called us hero's, I think not. Let us not forget terrorist's and what they have done to us, but let us not also build shrines for their deeds.

I think it should. But national holidays take a while to become reality (maybe government redtape?). One touchy thing though... will this holiday also accidentally wind up being a celebration by the terrorist Muslims? That would suck.
