No. Leave the lighter at home and buy a cheap disposable in CA. You can usually find them for aound a dollar.

Only in checked baggage. You are not allowed to bring a lighter in a carry-on. And since smoking on airplanes was universally banned in the early 90's, there's no need to bring a lighter on an airplane these days anyway.

Which makes me wonder how people can light their cigarettes in airport smoking sections if they aren't supposed to bring lighters... scary thought.

Yes, as long is it is a standard disposable lighter or a zippo, but only in carry on. It sounds counterintuitive but you can not check a lighter.

no lighters on planes. You are allowed up to 4 packs of safety matches (those that you cannot strike anywhere) on your person or in your carry on bag. You can pack up to 2 Zippo lighters in your checked bags if they are packed in an airtight plastic container.

At this time due especially to the most recent threats, there is no liquids allowed in your carry on luggage, not ever shampoos etc... However you can leave it in your luggage going into the cargo hold. You will not need it any way, because you cannot smoke on board.
