why would anyone really want their kids to go trick or treating anyway, not only is it begging, but if you know what halloween is really all about- WHY???
It puts pressure on people to feel obligated to give, encourages children to expect things, and quite often causes old people to be terrorised by teenagers going wild.

Trick or treating was mainly an American way of celebrating Halloween and for some reason the Fad ended up here in Britain. Although I don't see any real harm (provided accompanied by a responsible adult) I can see your very valid point...When I was of the age when Halloween was all witches & spooks, we as children had never heard of trick or treat, so I think it's down to modern ways of life and adopting some of our fellow countries traditions. But I know I certainly would not allow my children to eat anything they were given by people I did not know.

Well, we all know that life is not clear cut don't we. Nothing is either black or white and this is this particular point we have to teach your kids.
As for Halloween, it's a celebration for one thing. Then children are not supposed to be going on their own and last, there is a reason for halloween. But again it's your choice what you choose to tell your kids about it.
Everybody wants their kids to be safe and sound. Only it won't be achieved by cutting their from reality, keeping them at home, preventing them to enjoying themselves by being with others.
Anything can happen anywhere; We need to give them the means to be able to remain safe and make the right choice.

Most parents allow their children to get the candy - but explain that they must examine it before they can trust it. I was never allowed to eat any of my candy until I got home. Usually a parent is with them also. My Dad or my friend's dad went with us EVERY year. My boyfriend's dad even dressed up when he went with them.
The idea of telling kids not to take candy from strangers on a daily basis is to prevent them from getting into a car or getting too near someone who might harm them.

Warning - Terrorists make Exploding Candy, especially handcrafted in secret caves below the White-house to blow up the lava of their infidel enemies
Willy Mohamed's Chocolate Factory, with Tallylumpa-Bombers
(not necessarily saying all terrorists are Islamic, but that's what you start to think if you watch too much news TV)...

I'm 15, and i've never been trick or treating on Hallowe'en. My parents never let me when i was younger, but now i'm older, i don't want to go particularly. It's a form of begging really isn't it, and most people don't need to do that. I mean, we give sweets to people who come to our door, but none of my family go trick or treating...

Yeah, but in this day and age who on earth would stay at home and let their kids go trick or treating?

I've wondered that myself. I go with my kids, and we stay in our neighborhood. Just a few blocks. All candy is checked before they eat it.
