Help! Can anyone tell me where to find a airline that gives half price or some discount for a seat in which a 1 and a half year old would sit in to fly with one parent internationally?

I recently flew with my granddaughter to South Africa, she had her own seat and i believe that they gave a 20 percent discount, The best thing is to find and airline that offers the best rate and find out if they give a discount for a child. I am sure that on an International flight you would not want to hold the child for the entire flight. Our flight was almost 11, hours to London and 11 hours to South Africa. We flew British Airways. I was extremely pleased with the courtesy of the flight attendants and there was many young children on board and they were very helpful to those parents. Just depends where you are flying.

A one and a half year old is an infant - and is until they have reached their 2nd birthday. Their airline status is "NS" which means no seat (and, paradoxically, no baggage allowance) If you want a seat, you will have to pay the child price (up to 12th birthday) which is, 62% of the adult fare - and a bit less on the tax front - BUT and this is a big BUT on some of the cheapest fares on some destinations, child fares do not exist. In these cases it may - may - be better to pay a higher fare to get the discount which means you pay less (eh?). Your child may fit in what is called a bassinet and seats for bassinets usually are located where there is more room generally. However, these only work for the smallest infants and "bassinet" is a polite term for what boils down to what is a fancy cardboard box. So - any old airline will do!

Most US based airlines give discounted seats to children under 2 years of age. This is because the parent has the option to carry the child on their lap free of charge but as I flight attendant I do not reccommend this especially on long international flights. You'll have to shop around to find which airline gives the best deal. Their policies may differ from domestic to international flights so read all the information or, better yet, call their toll-free number - in many cases child fares cannot be booked online anyway.
