Non-citizens may enlist, but cannot reenlist (extend their enlistment beyond their first term of service) unless they become naturalized U.S. citizens. However, after service of three years, additional residency requirements for citizenship can be waived. The Military does not assist in immigration naturalization process.
For enlistment purposes, the United States includes Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, The Northern Marianas Islands, American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, and the Marshall Islands. Citizens of certain countries may require a waiver to enlist. These include citizens of countries considered hostile to the interests of the United States.

You do NOT have to be a citizen. If you are a citizen of any ally country of the U.S. you may join. The link below is on an official Army website.

You can join with a green card. My husband was in the Army for 3 years, and he was not a citizen. He did have a s.s card though.

Mrsjvb is right on the money. You must be a legal resident of the US, not necessarily a citizen and also right on the money about the security clearance. As for the reenlistment, as long as you are still a legal resident of the US you can still reenlist.

In the navy depending on where you are from you only have to be a resident..They will help you get your citizenship. I can not say you wont be given a hard time, because you will. We had a few in my squad they were given alot of mouth by other's. I think it is stupid. But it did happen.

Current Army Regulation states that you must have an I-551 card. Your best bet is to go to your local Army recruiting office and ask a recruiter. Check out www.goarmy.com as well as www.military.com.
