The difference between the normal receiver and the HD receiver, of course, is that the HD receiver will receive an HD signal.

Yes, an HDTV receiver and an HD-DVD player will work with your EDTV (actually, they will also work with regular TV's, as they come with composite video outputs, too). The thing is, what makes an EDTV an EDTV is that it only has 480 lines of resolution--numerically, the same resolution as that on standard television sets and output by standard DVD players. So you can watch the stuff, you're just not getting the benefits of the HD signal. So going cheap on the TV means it's not going to make much of a difference splurging on the other equipment.

I don't know what you mean by a "normal" receiver. There are two kinds of receivers: NTSC and ATSC. NTSC is the old analog TV we have been receiving for years. ATSC is digital TV. ATSC is not necessarily HDTV, but as far as I know every ATSC tuner receives and outputs HD when that is broadcast. Even with your non-HD plasma, the picture quality from ATSC broadcasts will be superior to the old NTSC. You won't get the improved resolution, but you will enjoy the benefits of noise-free and ghost-free pictures.

While you will be able to play HD-DVD on your TV, that will provide very little improvement over regular DVDs. since all DVDs are digital.

i havent seen a non-hd plasma

but with the HD, find out which channels are going to be in hd. There is a HUGE change just from standard definition to digital, but from standard to hd it's amazing!
