I got a citation for making an unsafe lane change at 1:20 in the morning, so the cop wrote me up with an unsafe lane change and gave me a citation. He said stuff "I'm giving you a break, blah blah" and handed me a citation. I thought he was just letting me off with a warning but then the ticket says I must meet in court in 60 days or something, with my parents. It's a citation not a ticket, am I confused or am I just screwed?

Don't get a lawyer... but read the citation closely. Either there is a fine on it, or you have to meet with the district justice to receive a fine amount. Generally this is informal and quick; the JD's secretary may even fill in the fine for you.

An unsafe lane change will likely run you between $50 and $100. You're not being arrested or arraigned though; a lawyer is unnecessary. Just go see the JD (or wherever it says you should go), get your fine, pay it and forget it. Since you're a minor, you will have to bite the bullet and tell your parents so they can accompany you.

Drive safely!

Well the break the cop gave could possibly have to do with a curfew violation. Many states now have laws about minors driving after 11pm or 12am, etc. I don't know if this is the case but it could be. Also - take the advice of the first poster and get a lawyer when you go to traffic court - if you take a lawyer they will more than likely drop the ticket. All you will be responsible for is traffic cost - and they may possibly tell you to go to driving school.

added comment: The poster below me is right. This is the reason you fight the ticket. Teens insurance is so high as it is - you don't want this on your driving record. Please be more careful in the future!:)

Let me act like a dad. Did you know over 5,500 people 15/21 years old will die this year in traffic accidents? More than are killed in all the wars this year. Drivers training is a joke a mess up period in school or afternoon. Then you go out late at night and get a moving violation? No curfew for young drivers. And did you also Know? of those 5,500 graves dug about 3,000 happened at night with other teenagers in the car showing off?

An unsafe lane change is probably considered a moving violation. you can pay the fine, which could cause your insurance to go up, take a defensive driving course, or get a lawyer and fight it.

Be a man and pay your dues. Generally the police will give a citation to a young person asking him/her to show up in court with their parents so that the parents are aware of their off springs misdemeanors. And generally the parents are harder on their "young un" than are the courts.
