I am a letter carrier, and was working on my route when the news first broke on the radio. First we thought it was a prank, but quickly realized how real it was. I live on Long Island. One carrier raced home because his sister worked in the Towers. She lived, thankfully, but other people I knew didn't. It was a terrible day memorialized in our town's park: I bellieve 12 locals were killed that day. One fireman I knew because he taught my driver safety course about two weeks before. There was another lady who had just come back to work from having a baby. Her brother was a mailman. I also know people from DC, so I was worried on that front. I remember how surreal it was; a mixture of profound grief, relief, and fear. Mail carriers on the island were terrified that day. Just two days before, my wife and I had flown back from St. Louis from my brother's wedding. I complained about the flight, the inconvenieces, etc. I sometimes think about how we, I, take things for granted.

I know many people have asked similar questions, but no one has asked if anyone knew someone that was lost. My hearts still go out to everyone who lost someone that day (or any other day). Shortly after 9-11, a police officer I knew died of cancer. He was in his mid thirties. Someone said something to the effect of "Well, at least he did't die in 9-11". We always have to remember those who were lost that day, but never forget to remember the lives of those lost any other day as well.

I was home, but I was only about 11 at the time. (Canada)
I heard about it during school and people thought it was a joke and not a serious issue, until we saw the issue on TV....that actually scared me.

I'n fifth grade at school. I was at a normal day at school when around 10 am some of the students in class were taken home. My father picked me up and told me that the Twin towers were gone. At first I thought he was lying until I saw the news and i found out that the towers were destroyed by 2 planes. Everybody knew about the towers even the comics. If you read Get Fuzzy then you know that Bucky(the tough cat)was badly shaken by the attacks. No I didn't know anyone who died there. I know a neighbor who escaped there.

In my country, the school starts on Sept. 11 after the summer vacations. That day I went to school, I got my new books(in my country we dont buy them, the school gives us the books) and returned home. That was when I heard about it.
Fortunately, none of my relatives was lost in the towers. I didn't actually know any of the victims, because I'm not an American.

in base housing with the tv on teletubbies or something similar for the kids until mom called.
Boy - our lives changed big time. Didn't see hubby except for him to sleep due to guard duty. Armed military guys walking our neighborhoods. The principal of my kid's school walked on post so that she could get there before school ended.
I ventured to the commissary once when I got the chance - and got stopped every couple of hundred feet for an ID check.
I didn't make it to *my* job off post for a month or 2.
I didn't know anyone at the WTC.

Wow,, that really touched me. Yah know and its true, we take life and everything for granted. We shouldnt! i was in school on that day,, i thought the world was coming to an end. My aunt was suppose to be on that plane that day, and around that area... god she didnt but i just cant believe she would be dead, its so sad to think how low those crazy people go and what they do. so many good people were killed. God how sad.... put yourself in in their position! Think what they were going through. god this makes me wanna cry.....its so sad =-( anyways, my aunt did live and im thankful. its sad but at least some people lived,, rather have some than not anything at all... god bless them, and god bless America! How dare those people do that,, they b shall burn in hell.... and tomorrow,, give thanks to god and memorate the great people we have lost. great question... and god bless america.
the people didnt deserve it,, and we should have been aware this was ganna happen. so freeking sad.. i cannot believe it was 5 years ago. at least there in a better place,, and i am so sorry for the people who have lost loved ones,, how sad.

I was at work in a State Department annex building in Washington DC. I could see the Pentagon burning from my office window.
I know people who lost friends, colleagues or relatives, but didn't lose anyone of my own.

Oddly enough I was in Las Vegas staying at New York New York. I was stranded in Vegas for a week. Not good, cause you tend to gamble when there. Got to see a few good shows, basically just by showing up.
Got to see Las Vegas turn all lights off in memory for victims.
