Why would you want to keep a 3 year old quiet? Young children are only quiet when they are sleeping. Let them be a kid. If you try to keep them quiet you are only surpressing their learning. Is this what you want? They learn through social interactions, and from their environment. I have included a link so that you can reserach child development.

wow... look at most of these answers. and these are the future (or present) parents of america? no wonder our children are suffereing!

i'm assuming the 3 year old is making noise right now and assuming your in the u.s. - that means it's the middle of the day. BUCK UP! the 3 year old is being a 3 year old. amazingly enough, children make noise! that's their job. to play, to have fun, to run and use their imagination. if the 3 year old is being inappropriate in the house - then get off you butt and take the 3 year outside. they have energy that needs to be burned off and sticking them in front of the television is not a healthy alternative.

btw, only idiots give advice such as duct tape or play with a dry cleaning bag, etc. what's worse is there are people out there that would try these ridiculous ideas! child endangerment or abuse? absolutely! and the one that gave the idea should be prosecuted besides the one that carried out the action!

At this stage there a many developments takin place in a child around 3 yrs of age esp the ones related to the mind-set count the most as the physical growth of the child is related to the mental development. If he she is mentally stable then there is normal physical growth.
1. Motor development (the ability of the child to usemuscles and bones to perform different skills) is improving considerably and the child shows muscular and physical maturity. You ought to promote the child's development by letting him play and practice as motor skills improve with that. The importance of motor development is that the child learns to become independent
2.Social development (ability of the child to behave in a manner acceptable in the society) makes the child possessive at this stage which makes him want the mother's undivided attention so at this stage the child should not be made to feel ignored but whn the child starts to feel ignored he/she endup becoming agressive and these habits which the child adapts during childhood remain with him forever. The social behaviour of the children at this age should be promoted by complimenting them on their good behaviour whereas the antisocial behaviour shud better be ignored. As far as possible do not scold or punish the child try to make them accept theor mistake or do not repeat the same in a sweet manner.
You sould not be an AUTHORITARIAN parent or a guardian!!

3.Emotional development varies among children. The child becomes jelous or starts feeling insecured at this age when not given proper attention. Jelousy makes them hit/bite others and often they break things and become destructive to attract attention. This is short-lived and short not be promoted.

3. Cognitive Development helps the child to think logically. Toys like blocks and children's videos like sesame street help them stay bzy besides the development of their cognition.

5.Language development: They are talkitive and start using words to make sentances... they learn poems n never tire readin them often. This is good and should be promoted

IN SHORT: To make the child stay quiet i.e. unecessarily crying or screaming keep him busy with the games, balls, toys, videos, fairy tales, nursary rhymes and so on... give him the eatables and ask him to eat himself!

I keep my 3 year old quiet by putting in a movie that they like. I know it doesn't sound like much but it works sometimes. Other than this, nothing keeps them quiet.

You give him a sippy cup or snacks. Go somewhere where it's okay for him to make noise. Don't stress yourself over it. It's part of being a little child. If other people give you the "look" it's their problem not yours. It's an accepted fact children will make noise in public places. People live with it. Mother's need to relax.

Actually it is refreshing to see the child's spontaniety in a rigid adult world. Children are a blessing and are refreshing.
