Enough time away from work when a parent (or child) passes away?

It really depends on the situation. Was it expected? Was it sudden, like an accident or massive heart attack? Not only are you grieving, but there's a whole lot of things to take care of. You are pretty much in a daze for at least a week. I feel that a company with any decency & compassion would look at the situation and not just go by the rule book.

No it most certainly is not. However most people who work at jobs where they have bereavement leave as an option also have acrued sick leave and the option of leave of absence which is more than the average joe-blow employeer is offering.

No. I would need a lot more time to be able to go back to work.

There should be a leave like maternity that if a person needs to take it they can. Death is so traumatic
