It is actually part of Christian tradition. Man needs a hat to keep the sun off his head in the summer, and to keep his head warm in the winter, but when he is inside he might pray or prophesy so he removes his hat in honor to God. (1 Corinthians 11:4) It is easier to keep the hat off since it is no longer needed than to accidently start praying and dishonor God. It is a custom for those that love and have real fear and faith in God. This custom has fallen out of use because Western society has forgotten God.

A hat is designed as head-protection...from sun, rain etc. Clearly, it is unnecessary indoors. Apart from that, removing your hat is simply a mark of respect. That's why men used to raise their hats to passing ladies or young men would raise their hats to older men. In the case of a uniform hat, the wearer - eg a policeman - is acknowledging by removing it that the house, office or whatever he has just entered is someone else's domain, not his.
In olden days, a knight's removal of his helmet would have been a signal that he was happy for his face to be seen and identified. It would also show that he was disarming himself by exposing his head to possible attack. Both of these were gestures of friendship.

'Is it still considered bad manners to keep you hat on indoors?' is a question often asked.
The answer, of course is 'Yes'. Well-brought up male persons remove their hats when entering indoors. It is an ancient sign of respect. There are exceptions. Exceptions of place: Indoor stadia? Museums and art galleries? Exceptions of caste: Serving soldiers. Bishops in mitres. Sikhs in turbans. Exceptions of headgear. Some young are so attached to their baseball and golfing caps worn back to front that they may be glued on. But in general in Western Europe it is good manners to remove one's hat indoors. Even if the custom seems silly to you, there are those to whom a hat worn indoors by a man is an uncouth act. Why offend them?

It should be noted that this custom applies only to men. Women may (and should) keep their hats on in circumstances when men would be expected to remove them.

ok i can understand those answers... but what about a beret? not the military beret, but a fashion one?? I wear one all the time, and will not take it off as it is a part of my wardrobe and what about those with cancer? I don't watn to see a bald woman's head, and if i had cancer,i don't want for ppl to see my bald head. i wear a beret as a part of the outfit, because I coordinate it with what I wear. So, does a beret fit into that one?
