does box dye work better on clean or dirty hair?

i was wondering if box hair dye works better, like willl hold the color longer/absorb better on clean or dirty hair. any help would be appreciated.

I have always been told that it is best not to put it on clean hair (but not too dirty either). That's what my hairdresser parents have always said.

Usually the box says not to apply the dye the same day you wash your hair. That's mostly because your freshly-washed scalp could be more vulnerable to irritation. In my experience, you want your hair to be fairly clean, so I'd suggest something like washing the day before and applying the dye the next day. That gives your protective scalp oils a chance to replenish. If you have used that particular dye before and know you don't have a sensitivity, it may not matter a whole lot. But if this is the first time dyeing, I'd take the precaution.

I've always washed and dried my hair before coloring it, and have never had any bad results. I think they say to leave it dirty just to have a bit of a barrier between the chemicals and hair, so it won't damage it so much.

it works either way. the reason they tell you to do it on dirty hair is because you scalp has oils that protect it so that the dye does not damage it. and when your hair is clean it does not have those oils.

Most boxes of dye say that your hair shouldnot have been washed in the last 24hours before dying your hair.

dirty..not real dirty...but like let there be 1 day inbetween washing of your hair...then dye it and then wash and contiion it.

clean is best. however, i do tell my clents not to wash their hair that day if im applying color directly on the scalp. less irritation.
