1999 Subaru Forester. Turn headlights OFF, dash displays are bright, turn headlights ON, dash displays are dim. There is a lead that controls this (for example, behind the clock), but how does it work? The reason I'm asking is that I have a 2004 Forester stereo installed and no where to attach this lead. Thank you.

Car manufacturers do not build audio equipment for their cars by themselves. It is build by radio manufacturers, and the most a car manufacturer can customize is usually the bezel showing the car's name. Subaru must have chosen a "good deal" for the radio, which simply doesn't have the option (i.e. the connector) to attach that lead you're talking about. For example, Acura RL (Bose Radio = expensive) does dim the radio illumination, but the Jeep Cherokee doesn't. To change that would mean you would have to dig deep into your audio system, find the circuitry for the dial illumination, measure whether presently used voltage is compatible with what comes out of the "control wire" you found, disconnect the existing illumination circuitry, hook up the control wire, fiddle it all through the housing......
Is it all worth it?
