I've been married for almost 7 years and we were together a year before getting married. I know I truly love my husband because when we are together and he does or says something that thoroughly ticks me off, I don't smack the crap out of him.
Honestly though, everyone has a different definition of love so you have to decide what love means to you. If your bf or gf fits your definition of love then you are probably in love. But, love is not a constant. Some days you could love them less and some days love them more. Love also takes work. When 2 people are in a relationship for a long period of time you both grow up and change. Sometimes it's closer together and sometime it's apart. Things that I would not tolerate in a relationship might not bother you at all. We all have different thresholds so it's important that you identify what you can deal with and what you won't.
Another relationship problem that is quite common is thinking that you can change someone and then they'll be perfect. People rarely change because we want them to. My first marriage I was convinced that he would be perfect if I could just change a few lil personality traits that I couldn't stand and my reasoning was that he loves me so why wouldn't he want to change. I was also pretty young and still thought I could change the world, one person should be super easy. Boy, was I wrong. We ended up fighting all the time because he wouldn't change (for me), and I kept trying to get him to change.
As for the specific question of how do you know if you love someone, we construct our own reality. That just means if we define somthing as real then that reality has consequences. So if you think you are in love, then you are. Even if it's not the "love of your life" you will still cry when your feelings get hurt by this person, and you will experience jubilation when he/she remembers a special occasion. So basically you are the only one who can decide if you are truly in "love". Best of luck in life and love.

i can't control my heartbeats when i m seeing her n when she is infront of my eyes i can't see anyother thing. she is my day's first thought n when i m tyred n going to sleep she is my last thought also...... from who i can feel some of this i can called in love with her.
