Sorry to hear about your Tiggy. Cats like a change of scenery once in a while, they just go on vacation so to speak. Being very independant, they don't feel they are your pet, you are just a creature that offers them a place to stay, food and water, occasional petting. After a while, they move on. I had a cat named Freddy that was totally cool. He 'ran away', I saw him about 2 months later healthy and happy living at a home with a little girl that obviously adored him. I smiled, waved and said see ya around Freddie.

The most common reason cats roam is to search for mates.
When neutered cats roam, they're probably just being curious about what they might find.
Roaming might also be a search for prey.
Cats have been known to find new homes when they wander off, and some cats lead double lives with two homes, and the humans in each home have no idea about the other.
I'm sorry for your loss of your Tiggy. I've lost a few cats and I know how hard it can be. You have my deepest sympathy.

perhaps tiggy was being fed elsewhere or found himself a mate
that's the most common reason for cats wandering off. im sorry to say that maybehe neighbours around his new area didn't take kindly to him using their garden as a toilet and cunningly left some contaminated meat out for him. youshould have demanded a post mortem. some people are sick in the head

o.k. cats go off for long periods of time to explore, hunt, think, they are intellegent creatures but most of the time they always come back. now it sounds as if your cat was trying to save you some heartache. Your cat went off to die where you would not see him or her (didn't tell me guy or girl) to spare you the heartache of loosing your 12 yr old best friend. I had a cat do the same thing. They don't understand that you want to be there all they know is they are dying and want to be alone and not hurt the one they love the most.

They say cats choose their homes, maybe thats wot hes doing. Allow him to come and go, theyre very smart. If you have any ideas where hes going try to speak to the person, s/he maybe feeding him. If youre a little worried ask them not to and hopefully he'll settle at home.
I had a cat who went missing for 2 years, then suddenly she reappeared! she stayed for a little while then went again. Havent heard from her since but Id like to think shes curled up infront a little old ladies fire keeping her company.

Out door cats sometimes find new homes to live. Sometimes they run off to die somewhere else when they are ill. He may have been hit by a car or contracted a fatal feline disease. when you have outdoor kitty's their life expectancy is slim. Next time you get a cat please don't let it be an outdoor cat you wont have all the problems and heart ache .

We have two cats, (brother and sister,) we have had them since they were very small kittens. They never go out and have never wanted to, sometimes in the summer, we leave the front door wide open but they just don't want to go out.
I'm sorry to hear about your cat. If cats have something wrong with them, they know, and they go and find somewhere quiet to die.

I'm sorry for your loss.
Cats have dignity but they tend to come home to die so something must have happened outside - maybe an accident with a car?
Some cats spend a lot of time outside where they hunt for mice to play with and they just look for somewhere quiet to sleep (they do like 16 hours of sleep a day, well don't we all).
We are mere slaves to our cats and they only need us to feed them.
I feel for your loss, I really do :-(

They don't want to hurt their owner's feelings when they know it is time to check out. My 2 cats did the same thing one was 16 and the other was 9. I cried because I remember when they were kittens.
