Spaniels are loyal, but they can be high-strung. They need training early on to make sure you don't get a hyperactive unenjoyable dog.
Also:
"Cavaliers are loving and sweet with all ages, from infants to seniors, and make wonderful therapy dogs. They are a perfect breed for a family pet and love to sit on your lap. They will follow you everywhere. They are indoor dogs and not happy outside unless you are out with them."

They usually make excellent family dogs. They were originally bred as companion dogs for the royal families. Here is a link to the parent breed club, (you will be able to find ethical and reputable breeders through this network):
http://www.ackcsc.org/
Even if you dont see anyone close to you contact them anyway. They will know of people in your area that are expecting a litter nearby.
This is the link for the Cavalier Rescue Clubs:

you may like the english toy spaniel as well, they have a different look but a similar personality:

PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE YOUR PUPPY FROM A PET SHOP. ALL of these puppies do not come from ethical breeding and most are straight from a puppy mill. You will pay the same or less for a dog that has a proven history and bred with ethics in mind. A really good book to buy if a puppy is in your future is : Before and After Getting Your Puppy>Dr. Ian Dunbar...http://www.dogwise.com/ItemDetails.cfm?ID=DTB790

We got a Cavalier King Charles just before my second child was born. He was wonderful with the children, and extremely affectionate. He was fun, happy and loved nothing more than to join in with the family. I would recommend one to anyone looking for a family pet. I suggest you get one as a puppy though so that the dog learns where his order is in the family.
They do get a reputation as yappy and greedy, but it's often the owner who has caused the problem - dogs that have been spoilt with too much attention and too many treats.

They make lovely pets. Not to big but have big hearts. Do need to be taken for lots of walks and do need to be groomed to stop that lovely coat from getting knotted. I am a dog groomer and I have never come across a nasy King Charles Cavalier.

They are great! They love people and are very playful. They are a lap dog and love to relax on your couch or lap.
But be careful which one you choose, because sometimes they steal different things (i mean anything the can pick up), and snap at you, growl, or try to bite you.
My Cava was like that, but we took him to the vet and they gave him a shot to cool him down a bit. It really works!
They also LOVE other dogs and are good with other pets. I have 7 fish and a cat, and they all gat along fine.
So Cava's are great as a family pet because they are great with children. Just make sure that if you got an aggressive one, like mine, take him to the vet and get that shot.
P.s. Most of the time when they act up, give them some food that they like and they'll be back to normal.

The one I used to have when I was little was never any good with children and always snapped at me whenever I went near it. A few more I have since met are too timid/skittish or nasty to be around young children but if the children are 12 or older the dogs seem to cope better. I haven't met that many that were good around kids but there are one or two.

My friend has a 3 yr old male that cost $1800. He's friendly, loves everyone & everything. She was going to give him up due to personal illness, but everyone wanted him for free. If they can't afford a few hundred $ fee. They would be too cheap to pay for special shampoo for his sensitive skin, regular grooming, and good food.

Great, We have a 6mth old pup and he is just great. I have 3 young children (ages 7,4 and 20mths) and he is so soft with them.
He can be a bit 'gobby' if he is left on his own, so if your not going to be at home them maybe not the dog for you.
These are fab little dogs. I love our Charlie to bits.

They are really neat little dogs. Sweet and sensitive. They will not tolerate rough handling though, so make sure your kids are up on how to properly play with puppies.

They are great as a family pet. They are very playful and can be annoying at times when you want to relax or get them to lie with you so you can stroke them to keep them quiet
