I'm a dentist.

"Get rid" of swelling? Once your swollen, you can't get rid of it. You can take measures to control it. Generally, swelling after wisdom teeth reaches a maximum by the third day or so, then starts going away.

If you're early into your second day, you can still put ice on your face but in all honesty, it probably will do little if anything at all.

Beyond day three, you should put heat on your face.

The normal procedure for wisdom teeth removal if you are having them removed in the chair is to do one side at a time. This is because they have to give you injections of local anaesthetic (which by the way does not cause swelling), which will make you numb for a few hours. Dentists do not like to numb both sides of the mouth at once because it is not very pleasant for the patient. Your upper wisdom teeth should just flick out because the roots of those teeth are usually neatly together offering little resistance, so therefore minimal if any swelling. You lower wisdom teeth are a whole different thing. These teeth are usually the most difficult to remove. They will give you a lower block injection in the back of the mouth which will make half of you jaw and tongue numb. Then they will cut a small flap to expose the tooth and possibly remove some bone so they can elevate the tooth and remove it. The more effort that is required to remove the tooth, the greater the chance of bruising and swelling. Ice compresses and lots of rest will ensure a speedy recovery but I am still not sure if you will be wanting to dine out 2 days later. Make sure following your procedure you do not smoke or do any vigorous exercise and start salt water rinsing extremely gently the day after. Do not rinse your mouth on the day of surgery or you could dislodge the all important blood clot that will eventually heal the socket. Running around or smoking could also cause serious complications that could take a very long time to heal. Maybe you should post-pone your surgery or your dinner.

You can't get rid of swelling, but you can relieve any pain associated with having your wisdom tooth removed. Put ice on the area the second day. After the third day, the swelling will start going away. You can use hot packs on the area on this day, but in another day or two, it should be gone. If the swelling continues, please call your Dentist.

My oral surgeon told me to apply ice off-on every 20 minutes on the second day. On the third day he said to use warm heat (warm washcloth) on your face off-on every 20 minutes. Take some ibuprofen for pain relief. *Make sure you can take it along with any prescription meds.
Hope that you feel better. Remember to rinse with salt water and be extra gentle when rinsing and brushing. I also didn't use a straw for a week or so to make sure the wounds healed properly.

600-800mg of ibuprofen a day will help. Remember to take this into account though if you are using painkillers such as Percocet.
