Has it's ups & down (the Choclate bars / Candy are better here than in the States, so I've been told)...... though judging by these 2 sites, the whole country seems to be going mad:
http://www.capc.co.uk
http://www.politicallyincorrect.me.uk

Though we do get fairer & less complicated deals when it comes to:
Internet Access
http://www.pipex.co.uk

Home phone connections
http://www.bt.com

Cellphone packages
http://www.vodafone.co.uk

TV
http://www.sky.com - trust me you'll need this, as only get 5 channels of cr*p off the Terrestrial aerial..... while with this SKY DIGITAL satelite, you'll also be able to get channels like FOX NEWS, CNN, Cartoon Network, Paramount Comedy Channel, Nickelodeon, Discovery Channels, National Geographic, ABC1 (UK channel run by ABC from the States), MTV, VH-1 + hundreds of other channels... including "MOTORS TV" (if you're into NASCAR, and want to be able to see the races while in the UK).

Hey, I'm from Houston too and I move to England withing the next month! What a coincidence. You should just be who you are. Sure you will have a different accent and use different words but most people will like that because you are a bit different. I'm moving to Harrogate farther North and I'm really excited to go. By the way, I hate tea also and everyone serves me Iced Tea in Texas. British culture is not that much different than our own in comparison to other countries around the world. I searched google Earth and I see less swimming pools but there is a theme Park named Alton Towers you can drive to which isn't far. I don't know about you but I was bummed out after Astro World closed down.

I too left Texas(Abilene) for England(RAF ALconbury) for our first assignment overseas. My oldest was 5 and the youngest 6wks. Mind you, this was back in 87' and back then, children were to be seen and NOT heard. For the most part, the local villagers were quite friendly. Occasionally, I would be forced off the sidewalk to the street by some woman and her pram LOL If you have to live on the economy for awhile, make sure you have "extra" cigarettes, BEER, and whiskey as the Brits have to pay ALOT more than you will. I guess you can say it makes them "friendlier". Just watch how fast the Budweiser goes when they're allowed on base at say an air show. The TAXES are outrageous for TV's and cars. Really though, overall it was an enjoyable experience except for the LAST part of 90' with all of the Desert Storm stuff. Relax and enjoy it and don't forget to watch Eastenders, Coronation Street, and Neighbors !!! Tah Mate !

Well, the first thing to get out of the way is that it will be colder and wetter than you're used to. At some stage you will need to get waterproof coats and footwear - leave that til you get here - we're experts.

Secondly, it's much smaller than you're used to. The countryside is green and there are many different kinds of plant and tree.

Thirdly, if he's in the military, you'll be surrounded by americans who'll be able to give you the straight dope and who will be able to tell you where to get the stuff you really can't do without from home.

Fourthly, it's beautiful here. American bases are in the countryside and some of the places you can visit will open your eyes and your heart. A lot of England is very old, there are more ancient buildings in some villages than there are in the whole of America. If you are at all interested in history or literature or just beautiful places, you can feast here.

Fifthly, houses are smaller. The main cost of housing is land and that's really, really expensive here. Smaller doesn't mean primitive though, you will be warm and dry and comfortable. TV is better, and in any case, anything good from the States is imported.

Sixthly, portions are smaller and food is, in general, less sweet. You'll have to walk further than you're used to, I'm not talking miles and miles, it's just that our towns were mostly built before cars and sometimes you have to park further away.

Seventhly, we have fewer hang ups than you do. You can get a drink at 18, Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction was seen as comical here and we would never have dreamed of draping nude figures so they wouldn't be seen behind people in news conferences like John Ashcroft did. We don't care what your religion is and we'd prefer it if you didn't tell us or talk about it. We also hate it if you tell us how much better things are abroad.

Eighthly, you and your son will be much safer here. Gun crime (outside big city centres) is almost unknown and violence against strangers is rare.

Tell your son it will be a big adventure. Tell him you can show him castles and towers and crown jewels. If you act happy about going, I bet he will too.

It depends on the part of country you gonna be living, London is more cosmo city with good restruarants and night life and my personal preference is Scotland for it's beauty and people.

Keep in mind that for few months you will be having much a cultural shock and gradually you settle down. People are friendly here and you hardly see much crime on the streets (nothing like you see in the States).

England is the opposite of Texas in every way. Stay in Texas. He'll have to come back to the US sooner or later.
