"we often think we can change the course of things by sacrificing one thing or the other. In thinking that our efforts can make a difference, we may have messed things up rather than helped. If we weren't so eager to be heoic and sacrifice ourselves "to make things better, " things could be left alone to run their course, and maybe there would be fewer problems in the world.
Leih Tzu, Chapter 80.
Personally I don't always agree with the statement above, but it is a different way of thinking of it. Taoists often report that people's meddling for good or bad often accentuates or carries on cycles of bad action even though the intention was good. So maybe the best is to stop telling everyone how wrong they are, and live your life pure and simple as nature intended... Maybe your example alone will help more than you think. Things naturally right themselves. It is also said in taoism, that if you prize objects as valuable, you create thieves...
I don't think the world can be saved by one man's death.
Personally I take nothing from Jesus's death, I do take meaning and lessons from his life and teachings though.
Being an atheist, I don't think we will answer for this one day, I think we answer for it everyday in the lives we live, our emotions, our actions, others emotions and their actions. The way you lead your life has direct consequences for how you lead you life - this is karma, but not the sort recorded and logged by some deity.
Besides in the story of his death, another couldn't replace Jesus, it wouldn't have worked to open heaven.

Sounds too painful to me. I am nice, but not even as saintly as some nurses. Nope that is not for me. No can do. Call me selfish if you will. If you would like to engage in that kind of behavior why not become a modern day penatente for starts. There are reenactments of this people carry a cross on their backs and beat themselves. They do this to feel the pain Christ did or I have no clue why. This came long before they ever mentioned it in that controversial movie the Da Vanchi Code. People have been reenacting this for a very long time.

Well, I know that MANY people back in those times got crucified. If I lived back then, being the person I am, I would have been arrested, tried and crucified just for being myself. If I believed that through my death the world would be saved, then I would do it. I'm all about giving to the community. However, I am not a Christian and I do not believe Jesus died to "save" me. He probably had the right intentions, but it's just not something I believe to be true. Blessed be.

Jesus was the only perfect person and the only begotten son of God so he was the only one who could save the world on the cross. So, no, I wouldn't trade places because Jesus was the Lamb of God who was born to take away the sins of the world. I would be willing to die for Christ but not take his place since my death wouldn't save anyone.

In only moment truth
Was seen revealed this mystery
The crown that showed no dignity he wore
And the kind was placed for all the world
To show disgrace
But only beauty flowed from his face
Would you take the place of this man
Would you take the nails from his hands
Would you take the place of this man
Would you take nails from his hands
And we just don't know the blood and water flowed
And in it all he showed just how much he cared
And the veil was torn
So we could have this open door
And all these things have finally been complete

No one died to save us or save the world. It is all a made up story. If you want to believe it, it is fine by me. No one is going to answer for anything to anyone. Once we die that is it. POOF!!!
