the total number of miles driving there is 2200 miles and im driving a 1998 mercury sable 6 cylinders 4 door

Figure out aproximately your MPG highway you get then divide that into the total distance (2200) That should give you a rough estimate. Get a tune up before you leave and you should get better gas mileage. Also, an FYI, gas is significantly higher in California than you're what you'll pay in other states as you cross.

I'll guess 5 or 6......we can get from Inianapolis to Topeka on 1 tank of gas and that is a 9 hr drive for us

Since you forgot to tell us the color of your sable. your highway gas milage, which route your driving and how much wood you will be carrying on the outside of your vehicle, we really can't help you. Since I can only answer each question once, no amount of editing will help.

how big is your gas tank? I get 600 miles to a tank I would need to stop 3 or 4 times
