St. Anthony, my friend there is only one name that can be spoken of when reflecting on what transpired on PRIDE's "Final Conflict" - MIRKO "C R O C O P" FILIPOVIC. This man quite literally wrote MMA history today and took this sport to another level. Never before (Fedor's fights included) have MMA fans have had the chance to see one fighter impose such complete domination over two world class opponents and win, what was probably one of the greatest MMA tournaments ever in such truly unprecedented and incredible fashion.
His first fight with Silva was expected to be a war and it turned into quick, one sided massacre and probably the worst beating this sport has ever seen. Wanderlei Silva had no chance. He came out swinging but Mirko's counter punches were perfect and soon he found him self on the floor being torn apart by lethal, Fedor like g n' p. When they got up a devastating straight left put Silva right back down where it was more of the same. By this time already Silva's nose was broken and his right eye completely swollen and shut so referee stopped the action to have the doctor check him out. For some reason he was cleared to continue and the disaster followed soon after. The fight was restarted on the floor but as soon as the referee stood them up it was all over. Silva started swinging wildly again and Mirko countered with few strong and precise punches, which bloodied his face even more, and two crushing middle kicks. Seconds after he set up another one, Silva dropped his hands down to cover the ribs, when all of a sudden a devastating left high roundhouse came up and it was lights out. And all this took place probably in no more then four minutes. Silva just dropped motionless. This was without question the worst beating of his career and he's lucky to even be alive. But truth be told, considering his behavior in and out of the ring and things that he's done to some of his weaker opponents he had this coming for a very long time.
Second semi final was a tremendous match. Josh and Rodrigo gave it all they had. They were standing and trading punches for a first few minutes until Josh put through a great right hand and knocked Nogueira down but was unable to finish it. Fight moved to the ground after that where they displayed some really great techniques but non got the upper hand. At the end of the round Nogueira had an excellent kimura and then arm bar attempt but Josh escaped in spectacular fashion, got the top position right after and ended the round with some strikes from Nogueira's guard. The second round was a ground battle again with Josh being mostly on top and controlling the action. He had a great knee bar attempt at the end and if the fight had gone on a bit longer maybe he would even have been able to get the submission, but unlikely. It was a real war and it went the distance as many expected. Josh won 2-1 decision (it should have been 3-0, I don't know which fight that judge that scored it for Nogueira was looking at).
So it was Josh vs Mirko in the final. Here Mirko's performance was again nothing less then perfection. Josh, much like Silva, really had no chance. Mirko was in complete control from start to finish. He set a high pace again, he was outboxing Josh, getting middle kicks in and absolutely dominating on the floor with his g n' p which was really incredible. The improvements that Mirko displayed in his ground game today were just unreal. Shortly before the end of round 1 Mirko got Josh on the ropes and then put in a vicious uppercut right to the liver which dropped him right down and some brutal g n' p followed again. One of the punches really hurt Joshes eye and he tapped out right before the end of the round, but all credit to him for holding out as long as he did.
So once again, MMA history was being made today. What Mirko has done and the kind of superiority and domination that he has shown over Silva and Josh (Silva in particular) was absolutely beyond any comprehension. As you probably know victory at this tournament got him a heavyweight title shot and a rematch with Fedor which he so badly wanted. And let me tell you something, if he brings this shape into that match I honestly believe that Fedor, as great as he is, is going to get crushed. I repeat, if Mirko brings this shape into their match Fedor is going down. I really can not wait to see this fight and how it turns out.
By the way, I agree with Andrew completely - anyone who even compares Liddell to Mirko is an idiot. Chuck is a good fighter but nowhere near Mirko's caliber and Silva's loss today can absolutely not be used as an example of what could take place if he were to have a match with Liddell.
Man, I must say I am, much like everyone else here in Croatia, overjoyed right now. Mirko is our national hero and it was truly amazing to see him fight this morning and after all this time finally get the big title that he wanted so much. Now he has crowned his illustrious career and proved without any doubt his rightful place among the very best.

Awesome. I don't like Silva and I'm glad Cro Cop knocked him out. This shows all yhe Wanderlai Silva fans that he isn't the best fighter out there and that Chuck Liddell can beat him.
Cro Cop also knocked out Josh Barnett. He is now the 2006 PRIDE Openweight Grand Prix Champ. I think he can beat Fedor.

i dont understand the logic of the person on top of me...
Crocop beat Silva so therefore Lidell can beat Silva?????
Do you honestly think there is a relationship?
Do you even think there is a similarity with Crocop and Lidell's fighting styles?
Grow up...
Crocop won against silva because he came prepared with a better strategy against and equally talented striker...
at this level of competition, with talents and skills at their prime, the only thing that sets winners apart is strategy and the mind game...
