Yeah, since july 2006, Microsoft has stop supporting Windows 98 & ME & XPSP1: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/support/endofsupport.mspx They also ended support for old programs such as office 97 : http://news.com.com/2100-1001-267884.html. Upgrade to office 2003. Have the Office 2007 BETA but thats just a test for now. Laterz.

Microsoft does not support a product after period of time they want you to upgrade to a more expensive version. if you are not having problems with this software then just ignore the messages. you dont have to update until you have problems. 97 was made for fat and fat 32 file systems but runs just fine on ntfs dont let anyone sell you something you dont need. all this message means is that you can no longer get updates for your software they will not make them anymore.

You can:
a) Ignore the message
b) Upgrade to a newer version of Microsoft Office(Office 2003)
c) Switch to another software suite, try Open Office its a free Office Suite, the best part is all your Microsoft Office97 files will continue to work on Open Office. It got options to save files in Microsoft Office's file formats, so all your contacts using Microsoft Office can use the files you create using Open Office. You can download the Open Office Suite free of cost from http://www.openoffice.org/

Microsoft does that in order to pressure you to update you office to the latest version, if you do that you could still have the tech support ( That's in Microsoft words ), but ...

There are several hundred forums and web pages with information that will help you with problems in Office 97 in the web.

So it's your choice what to do.

Unless you actually contact Microsoft for every little problem you have when running the software, then don't worry.

Have you tried thinking about upgrading so that you can keep up with the others?
