No, don't shave your head! Even though it's only three inches long, you still have several options. There are straighting shampoos and conditioners that won't totally straighten it out but will help.
The best thing you can use is a straightener with ceramic plates. You would only need like a half inch to one inch plate.
I have hair past my shoulders and use a two inch plate straightener. If I were to let it dry on it's own it's a bit frizzy, so I use some products on it. My favorite is frizz ease.
Find a girlfriend that has a straightener and use hers so you will know for sure that this will work for you and let her give you some pointers since she has one and knows how to use it and you will be a pro with it in ten minutes!!!
FYI: I say use one with ceramic plates because it won't fry your hair.
I start out drying my hair to make it straight as possible, then use the straightener. The straightener also makes it very soft, I just love it. You even have the option to put just the amount of curl in it if you want one day for it to not be totally straight.
If you don't have a girlfriend with one, I suggest to go ahead and buy one. I think you will be very pleased!!!!

Who says curly hair is not functional or cool? It might be easier for you to change your attitude and self--perception, than to change your hair!!
You cannot change the hair permanently. It will be straqight if the cross--sectional are of your hair follicle is circular; it will be wavy if the hair is oval; it will be curly if the hair strand is almost flat.
Any treatment is temporary, and would require professional help.
You can wash it and blow dry it flat. That will help for a while. Or you get let it grow longer, and gravity will pull it into a straighter look.
In the long run, one has to accept everything that they were made as, genetically.
( I realize that the sex--change transgender people don't follow this, because they somehow believe that nature made a mistake and trapped them in the wrong body.) :--) I'm not suggesting that you change into a female so that your curly hair would be a perceived asset. :-)

Actually, you should embrace your curls! There is a lot you can do, but first start out with a hair cut that you can maintain easily. Another option is to grow it out long (like Slash from guns n' roses) which is a very sexy look too!
As for products, the key is to make sure that after washing your hair, that you apply your hair product to VERY wet hair. Some great products to try are Miss Jessie's line specifically for curly hair, Ojdad which also gives great moisture, Phytospecific spray and the Ouidad line. After you apply your product, make sure that you don't scruch the hair (or dry it with a towel!!!), as this can create frizz and poof. Just let it dry natrually and look great!

Guys with curly hair are cute, IMO. I say, work with what you got! But if you really want to straighten it, maybe you can get it relaxed at a salon. Or try styling it with gel. But that might not work especially if your hair is very curly.

Straightners are pretty bad for your hair. As 3 inches is pretty long, I´d just cut it shorter, go to a hairdresser and tell them you want it shorter and ask for advice on what will suit your face.

right , go into an african shop and buy hair relaxer. its generally use for afro type hair but i know people who have used it and it works fine for them . it aint expensive but you do have to wear gloves because it can be dangerous if it is left on your skin for too long. it should work fine and it leaves your hair really straight

i'd say suck it up, because a lot of girls think that curly hair on a guy is sexy, but there are a lot of strighting shampoos, so if you really hate it, just use one of those...

get it cut, so its not 3 inches long. curly hair looks cute on guys i think... when its long too, but if its THAT curly, cut it... really short, but not buzz cut, then it'll look wierd growing back, just cut it shorter, but so its still curly and not afro looking.
