Sam D ~
If you think it's disgusting, then you'll never get it. I've never seen anyone in the thirty plus years I've been involved in this incredible sport beat another Boxer to "a pulp" .Pulp: Soft moist shapeless matter or a mixture of crushed ore and water. Pulp: A publication, such as a magazine or book containing lurid subject matter. There have been deaths, bad decisions, lopsided fights, bad fights and some very incredible fights.
There's something about two athletes going into the ring and using all their abilities to beat the other man on a points system (usually a ten point must system) This isn't team sport it's an individual sport, Man against Man or Woman against Woman. That's it, it's pure.
Teddy Atlas, former Fighter, Trainer, Commentator and Now Author said it best, "You can have two of the worlds greatest Chess players playing Chess against each other on one corner and on the other corner there will be two guys fighting, now this is on any street in America and there will always be a bigger crowd watching the fight." It's the nature of the beast.
I agree that boxing isn't for everyone. I don't get Golf but it's our own individual preference that makes us human. Thanks for the question Sam.

People like it because it's a highly competitive sport. It's not just 2 people trying to beat each other to a pulp but there are a lot of technicalities and athleticism that goes into this art of pugilism. You could also say that there is the primitive side to people that enjoys the gladiator sport.

boxing is so popular because people love to watch a good train wreck - when you put 2 highly trained and motivated athletes in the same ring and death is looming in the air, we just can't help but watch - I personally like boxing because even though there are 2 athletes trying to hit each other, I marvel at how some boxers are so good at making the other guy miss with tremendous defense and I also love to watch them execute a game plan - a true boxer is not a slugger - a true boxer is a surgeon, picking the other boxer apart over the series of rounds - a great sport

I like it because it is two athletes battling for a common goal. Boxing is an art-form. Disgusting is not a way to describe it at all. Fighting is the most physically draining of all the sports. Not liking boxing makes you less of a man.

I'm hesitant to answer this "troll" question. My best advice for Sam--enjoy your figure skating and WNBA broadcasts. You wouldn't understand the amazing heart, toughness and bravery of men like Arturo Gatti, Mickey Ward, Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera anyway. I've probably watched round 9 of the first Ward/Gatti fight over 100 times--even now, I'm still transfixed every time I see it. If you can't appreciate what makes this 3 minutes of action--and by association, this sport at its highest level--utterly amazing there's no hope for you. Get to a doctor and have him check for a pulse. How do you see any boxing on the "Lifetime" network anyway? Did Oprah do a special on the sport?
On a related note, this is a good opportunity to relay one of my favorite quotes about boxing. It comes not from a fighter or boxing writer, but from a guy I met at my local cigar store. We were shooting the breeze and the subject turned to boxing--he booms out this great line:
"If a guy tells me he doesn't like boxing, I question his masculinity"

I some how agree,it is disqusting when it gets to bloody situations! However there is technique and brain in the sport. And why some people like it so much? Just go back to pre-history: BASIC INSTICTS!!!

It's disgusting! Period. All you people are just making excuses for it somehow being okay to beat up another human being. It is not about the "sport" or the "athletic ability" or the "skill"....is barbaric and disgusting. PERIOD. And so is anyone who finds it to be "entertaining"! OMG! The dark side of human nature for sure!

it's a great sport, you've never been as alone as you are in the ring & you'll never be pushed as hard as that again. team sports or races against the clock can't compare, try it sometime.
