Honestly man, the best way to propose to the woman you love can't be defined. If she loves you, and knows that you put thought and effort into it it'll be perfect.
I've had friends proposed to in the following ways.
On a canoe at sunrise (they were old fashioned)
New Year's Eve at the Eiffel Tower. He didn't even have a ring (they were impetuous).
He filled her house with flowers (high school sweethearts)
Driving down a highway doing 90 (they were crazy)
On a weekend leave at Redondo Beach (his was in the military and it was a long distance relationship).
It doesn't matter because when any of these girls tell the story their eyes shine with love for their men.
If you know her you'll know when and where.

I really hate when I hear that a woman was proposed to by the guy simply dropping to his knees somewhere and saying will you marry me. You are making a lifetime memory so make it good. If you have a small budget it could be as simple as making a DVD movie and adding your own proposal at the end. Remember to make it the kind of movie she really likes and that would depend on her. Not all women like mushy movies. If shes a basketball fan see if you can get some tickets real close to the action. It seems everyone loves a proposal and most people will help out with the proposal. Have someone phone that they found something of hers and put a little card in it that says will you marry me. Make up a gift certificate that is redeemable for one you and married life. You can pick up the form in any stationery store if you can't do it on your computer. You still have to think of a romantic time and way to give it to her though.

Look at her personality and your relationship and go from there.
A few suggestions that are pretty original:
1) Hot Air Balloon ride--proposing a couple hundred/thousand feet above
2) Take her favorite hobby and go from there.
3) A museum--kind of unique, kind of plain
4) Sporting event, if you BOTH are into sports (although, once again, fairly normal)
5) A hike ending a table by a waterfall
And the usual:
1) Nice restaurant--what could be better than doing what everyone else does?
2) Crusie--ah, stuck on a boat with thousands of other people. Great idea. Oh look! There are 15 more couples who were engaged on this very night too!
3) Anything that involves the ring being baked, laid on top of, or placed in a piece of food AND IT IS NOT APPARENT--choking hazard!
Really though, the best advice is to listen to her and know her. You know what she likes and doesn't like. Listen to your heart and listen to hers.

Try something she won't expect! Don't do it on a holiday or her birthday...
Try going to a place you went together early inyour relationship (like your first date or something similar) and ask her there.
Take her on a weekend getaway to make it special.
Do it at her parent's house or somewhere there is family so you can all celebrate together.
If you have a pet (or a baby even..) Put a note and the ring on a ribbon around its neck.
Spell it out in rose petals on the floor.
Wrap it up in a big box so she doesn't know what is in it (she'll think a large gift.)
Put the ring on her finger while she is sleeping but be careful not to wake her up! Then when she wakes, tell her you will make all her dreams come true!
Good luck! Im excited for you!

Girls like to be asked in a romantic way. Not just the traditional way. Maybe you can ask her where you guys first met or had your first date at. You can go to a resturant and have the waiter bring it to her when he brings out her dinner or dessert.
You can do a scavenger hunt. Give her clues to find it.
You can take her on a picnic. A horse and carriage ride.
These are all so romantic that she will love.

I love hockey... specifically Red Wings hockey... so I honestly would love to be proposed to at a game... that would be so cool to be asked in front of all those people and have them cheer when I said "yes".
Find something that your girl loves... or loves to do... take her to do it... and surprise her while she's having the time of her life with the love of her life... nothing is better than that... AND she'll especially never forget it... or expect it.
don't be too obvious... and don't tell any of her closest friends to see if they would agree... they will tell her... girls can't contain the excitement of something like that.
GOOD LUCK ROMEO!!!!!
