I don't live in a commonwealth, so even though my grandparents are UK citizens I can't do that.

From where? If you are a USA citizen then the UK is part of the visa waiver program. Do you want to just go for a visit or go to school or work? Contact the UK Consulate nearest you.

Enquire ur nearest UK Visa office and get the needful details and then apply.
