In the US the most successful have been airlines that stick to one fleet type such as Southwest Airlines which uses Boeing 737's.. This cuts overhead on parts storage for multiple fleets, training both ground and flight crews on multiple fleet types, and equipment needed to maintain the fleet. Now this doesn't mean that the 737's are the best, simply that Southwest chose the 737's since at the time that was the best short haul fleet type around.

Now if you were to start an airline today it would have to be the Airbus a319/320's. The reason for this is that they are soo much cheaper to buy than American made aircraft being they are government subsidized. You could ( wild guess here) probably buy 5 airbus's for the price of 3 737's. And of course if they are cheaper to buy they are also much cheaper to lease which most airlines do.

Just look around and any new airline companies (no frills) in any country and you will notice they are flying airbus's. Many older carriers are switching over to them as well as a cost cutting measure. I work for United Airlines and pre 9/11 we had very few Airbus's in our fleet. Most short haul flights were made up of 737's. Now 737's are rare when compared to airbus's.

As for extremely short hops the RJ-200's are used but that's for smaller regional carriers.

In India it's mostly A320 (Airbus) for te long haul routes, some Boeing 737 (I doubt that), and ATR's for then short haul or unimportamt routes by the low cost airlines.

it rather is fantastically obvious economics. The decrease the barrier of get right of entry to the extra people will enter. extra people can arise with the money for to fly. Is the cost of the tickets in India a barrier? Do the kin earning (and extra) come close to paying the minimum expenditures of flying the planes?
