The days off Americans get off from their job depend more on their job. Some occupations like nurses may have their days off in the middle of the week and work on weekends. Hairdressers at least where I l Ive usually have off Sunday and Monday. However, I would say the majority of Americans have Saturday and Sunday off and it was started for sabbath reasons but is no longer the primary reason.

This has been a question for a long time. The French, during their Revolution, attempted to make the year 10 months long, and each week 10 days long. Didn't work, for a lot of reasons, not the least of which people were being worn down.

Today, 2 days off per week is a luxury that we can well afford. Whether it's just due to historical practices, or whether it's a physical help, is really hard to know. It's hard to find volunteers to do it any other way!

The 7-day cycle has no astronomical basis, unlike the rest of our time periods, so perhaps the religious explanation is correct.

not necessairly. the job sometimes determines which day off one has. as a person who has a rotating schedule can attest. then there are also some jobs which require a person to work seven days a week before they have a day off depending on what the work schedule is like. then there are those people who work more than one job and have no days off until either a holiday or vacation time.
