Do you have access to old family photo albums that may contain pics of him when he was a child? Find a pic of him fishing or boating, riding a bike or playing basket ball or something like that or even a pic of him and his closest parent, relative, or best friend...enlarge it...change the color to sepia and buy a nice frame for it. (Wood or bronze tone looks great with sepia prints... if you use an 8X10 frame, look for a brown Matt and print the picture as a 5x7) You can copy, change the color, and print the picture at any Wal-Mart that has a photo center with a Kodak picture Maker or Fugi Digital Picture printer. Make sure the picture you want to duplicate is a snap shot, not a studio picture as the studio picture may be covered by copy-write law. Wrap it nice and Tada...he can place it wherever he likes. I wouldn't print larger than a 5x7 if I were you and if you can find a nice 5x7 frame there will be no need for matting. FYI, If the pic is really small, like less than a 3x5 you'll not want to print it larger than a 4x6 as it may lose resolution. If you are forced to print 4x6 you'll need to use matting in a 5x7 frame...Some stores have really nice 4x6 frames also. Happy shopping.

I saw a bag of goodies given to an "over the hill" birthday guy that should have been under $40. Had Preperation H, Denture cleansers, Fiber tablets, all the drug store kind of stuff you'd expect an elderly person to have. It got a lot of laughs and was quite clever. That is as long as your brother in law has a sense of humor.

a mug with " over the hill" printed on it
depending on what his interests are - maybe a good pen- with his name engraved
a freind of was given 50 x $1- coins for her 50th bday.- you could give him 40 x $1- notes- individually wrapped
if he likes puzzles then some of those brain teaser puzzles
if you have a good relationship with him- maybe even a nights bowling or whatever - just the 2 of you
pewter mug with 40 on it

Get him a humorous card and put a restaurant GIFT CARD in it. Men love to eat, plus this gift will keep giving as he'll think of you as he enjoys a good meal.
