If you do not want to literally stick your thumb and forefinger into the ingredient and pinch some, a pinch is 1/16 to 1/8 teaspoon. It is not meant to be exact. Use more or less to taste.

Too much emphasis is placed on exact measurements today. Exact measurements are needed to calculate calories, but not to have successful recipes. My great-grandmother never owned a measuring cup or spoon in her life. My mother was challenged in high school Home-Ec to bake a cake without using measuring cups (the instructor said it couldn't be done). Not only did she make the cake, but it turned out better than the cakes from the strictly followed recipe. A recipe is a guide not an unbreakable formula.

the smallest measureing spoon I have is 1/8. So I always figure a pinch is about half that or approx. 1/16. In any case, I'm not very precise with measurements. I just take a pinch of whatever, say salt, and sprinkle. There you go, pinch!

Whatever fits between your thumb and either your pointer finger or both your pointer finger and middle finger. That all depends if you want a small pinch or a large pinch

A pinch is the little bit that you can pick up with just your index finger and thumb. Measurement wise it would be a quarter tsp or less.

In my opinion it's all up to you. If you watch Food Network or other cooking shows, their "pinches" can be handfuls. Take it as "to taste". Start small and then you can always add more. But you can't take extra back out! :)
