Your floppies are bad. Sorry, but they just don't last long. I doubt seriously if you will get the important data back. Even CD's are not that dependable. The best thing for you is to get a portable hard drive and keep important files on there. The new flash drives are also the up and coming thing. They are not very expensive, and your data will be safe. Always keep your discs in a cool dark place when not in use. There are website that can tell you how to take proper care of these. I have learned from experience because I lost very important files, which could never be replaced. I didn't realize that the floppies and cd's have a shelf life and if not taken care of properly, lose their data. One of the worst things is taking them in your car and leaving them for just a few minutes can damage them beyond info retrieval.

As a last resort, try inserting them in the same computer and if that doesn't work, try a friends computer. If this fails, the files have been destroyed. Sorry, I know how you feel.

I have floppies made in 1990 that are still readable. Sometimes if a floppy was formatted with a different version of DOS than what is used now you have trouble reading them.
I think Win 95 was the last version that reported the DOS version at the command prompt. Later versons just say what version of Windows you are using.
Run Scandisk or Chkdsk on the floppy.

Is this a 3.5" floppy or a 5.25" floppy? Same thing applies. If you can't read it, try another computer. But first, take a clean floppy and try to read and write to it to make sure the drive is okay.

Sometimes when you put the floppy in a different computer it does that, if you have access to the original computer then try that.

If it says the same on all comps you try then seek professional advice.

In the future, re-consider your method of backup. You could try:

-- CD's ebay have cheap ones
-- Backup files regularly using a webhost e.g. www.digitalracks.com
-- DVD's, same as CD's but you can store more data
