Here's a good chart outlining how much people of different heights and body frames should weigh (approx): http://www.healthchecksystems.com/heightweightchart.htm

And the government has a number of programs that can help you, here's one: http://www.consumer.gov/weightloss/ (I'm not one to necessarily trust the government, but they do have a lot of useful information there.)

Also, the FDA puts out a lot of literature about good nutrition: http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/wh-nutr.html

The best advice I can give you is to make a few minor changes in your lifestyle and they can go a long way. I gained 50 pounds with my first baby and didn't exercise a bit but managed to lose amost all of it already. I took the stairs more frequently at work (even just a few floors a day will go a long way), parked my car further away from the building so that I would have to walk a bit, and tried to eat smaller portions. I would eat only until I was not hungry any more, not until I was full. I ate more frequently than before, but the portions were smaller and it did wonders.

Best of luck to you! You can do it! :-)

Optimal health comes from either exercising your body into health, or nutrition. A combination of both is the best way.

It all depends on where you are physically and your environment you're living in. Is there crappy food all around you? Do you know anyone who is healthy? Do you have a support system? And are you able to physically exert yourself?

Not possibly knowing these answers, I'd recommend any combination of the following:

Cleanse
Apple Cider Vinegar Detox Diet

Stallone published a pamphlet on getting started at the gym that's really good too.

Join a really good, positive gym.
If you can afford personal training or a positive gym that get you motivated, that's a very helpful start.

Get an iPod or something to motivate you.
Get a good pair, a really good pair of sneakers.
Get a chiropractor to align you.
-at your level of health, your joints and spine are probably largely out of alignment. This will help you have more energy and sleep much better.

Drink high quality Green Tea, like a gallon. And sit in a sauna/steam room.

Drink 1.0-1.5 gallons of quality distilled water a day.

Set a goal.

And if you can't do cardio, and your diet sucks. You should probably start weight training doing 5 sets of 5 reps daily. You need to stimulate muscle growth to get your metabolism humming. The endorphins will push your body and release good feelings in your mind. If you do that, your body will want better foods for you to eat.

Good Luck.

As for how much you should weigh, that all depends on your muscle mass. I am 5' 10 1/2 " and I weigh 205 right now, but I have around 175 lbs of lean body mass. I used to weigh 300 bls, I used a plan called Shapeworks and lost 95 lbs in 8 months, and have kept it off for over 4 years now. Here is where I found it: www.loseweightnow.com/tfward

You can find out what you should weigh and all the advice you need to do it on this free website where you can track your calories eaten and burned through exercise and also get support from chat boards with other members called http://www.sparkpeople.com

It's an excellent resource, full of good tips, tools and advice and even shows demonstrations of proper exercise and strength training techniques and it really got me motivated after years of demotivation. I don't what it was about this site, but I've been exercising nearly everyday since I started it.

I've lost 10 lbs so far, been on it for 2.5 weeks!

Hey Girl! I actually started out at 252 1/2 pounds at 5'8" a few months ago! And let me tell you all that weight affects your whole body inside and out and your mind and spirit. I have so far lost 27 pounds and feel better already but still have a long way to go. What I do know for sure (because believe me I have tried most every diet) is that by watchiing your carbs you will start to lose wieght. I don't mean to follow the Atkins diet like a bible but just by watching what you eat "STAY AWAY FROM ANYTHING WHITE SUCH AS POTATOES, WHITE SUGAR, WHITE BREAD, HOW MUCH MILK YOU DRINK, ETC..." I love milk but have limited how much I drink a day. And also bright colored vegetables limit them. You can still eat healthy but by being conscious of what foods are loaded with carbs and limiting them you will with a doubt start to lose wieght. When they say drink water "Drink lots of water" Not only will it fill you up, it will help cleanse your body of the waste as you lose wieght. And I can't forget the part of keeping you regular. There is a cereal that is wonderful. One bowl a day will provide you with most of the recommended 30 grams of the fiber your body needs daily. "Kellogg's All Bran cereal has 13 grams of fiber per 1/2 cup serving. 1 cup per day will give you 26 grams of fiber. A dietician told me if I was to eat 1/2 cup every morning and 1/2 cup everynight that I would lose wieght for sure. Not only will it keep you regular it will also help prevent colon cancer. You will get the rest from vegetables and fruit you eat. Yes you can have fruit but there are some fruits much better for you because they contain more fiber and are lower in carbs. All types of berries, and catelope are great for dieters. Fry your eggs and food in olive oil! Olive oil will lower your colesterol. If you bake something that requeres vegetable oil or butter substitute with olive oil. I do this all the time and the flavor is still great! I don't even really like to use the word diet because it sounds painful. What you need to think of it is a new life change. Little Debbye cakes are extremely unhealthy. My tri-glicerides were at stroke level! My doctor said I have to stop eating them because there is nothing of nutrional value to them and they will keep making me sick. Can you imagine having on your tombstone "Death by Debbye Cakes!" I know it sounds funny but it is so true we are what we eat. You eat unhealthy then you will be unhealthy! If you can get a complete blood workup before you start your life change and a few months later get the tests again and compair how your body is much healthier. The first two weeks will be hard because your body is getting adjusted to a healthier way and is actually detoxifying from all the processed and unhealthy sugars. Take a good multi-vitamin each day. You can get good inexpensive vitamins from your local dollar stores now. A lot of people don't realize that excessive fat can actually cause schlororsis of the liver. I got scared when my tests came back and my liver panels were extremely elevated. Just by changing my lifestyle of eating I am within 2 points of it being back to normal. And no I don't drink or smoke. It was the fat that was affecting my liver! Not only that but fat can cause infertility, can enlarge your heart, it makes your feet, shoulders, and back hurt from all the excessive weight. I know I still have a ways to go but I will do it. I did buy me a stair climber and a skier from a thrift store and started working out. I could only start out about a couple of minutes a day but now I can do 15 minutes on each machine a day and I can actually walk up a few flights of stairs at work now which is something I absolutely could not do 3 months ago. I was pretty unfit at that time. If I can do it anyone can. YOu will have good days and bad days but just don't give up! My weight should be about 150 pounds. For your hieght you should be about 160 to 180. Believe me after you lose 60 to 80 pounds you will feel years younger and will look great! Good luck and God Bless!

You should weigh 170. Diet and exercise (weight lifting and aerobic activity). Sounds like you're in for a slow and steady plan. It's a lifestyle, a second nature behavior, not a made for tv quick fix. Tortoise and hare: slow and steady.

Look into Weight Watchers. The rah-rah stuff may seem hokey, but you don't starve, and it helps to know you need to come in and be weighed each week.
