my cat goes walkies with me. He smells all the other animal scents (dogs and other cats) growls and sprays. I am concerned that this emoting anger (growling and hissing) regularly will have an adverse effect to the cat in the long run.

He thinks of your regular walkies route as HIS territory, and is pissed that these other animals have been spraying their stink on HIS land! He is just very territorial. As long as you don't meet up with another cat who thinks the same thing, I doubt if you'll have any problems.

probably not, he's just trying to be the big cat on the block, or watever. its normal for cats to growl and spray at unfamiliar animals or smells.
