I just asked this question in a different way and it was completely misunderstood by all the believers who answered it...
If you believe in the existence of God, and are a curious, rational person wouldn't you be more interested not in what God wants you to do, or what Jesus or Muhammad did etc but in the biggest questions of all?
Who or what is God?
Where did he come from?
How is he constituted?
How did he come into being?
Who or what created him?
If he wasn't created how can he just be?
Why did he create the universe?
WHY does he want us to do these things that he wants us to do?
BIG questions. Big scientific questions. Not just "should I keep the sabbath" or "is homosexuality wrong"...
Why are you all just talking about WHAT God wants you to do?

I'm sorry, but from a cosmological point of view, from any objective assessment of reality, the statement God is Love is meaningless.
God cannot be a human emotion. You are still missing the point.

I've read the Bible. It doesn't answer ANY of those questions, or even attempt to answer them...

who is God? Moses asked that question the answer he got was. I Am. I am the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end the one who was, who is, and is to come.
where did he come from? He always was, even before there was a beginning, he made the beginning, he was, before there was a where.
how is he constituted? in Spirit
How did he come into being? always was even before the beginning.
who or what Created him? God was not created. if you cannot understand that he was not created how could you possibley understand that he just could always be.
Why did he create the universe? Rev. 4:11 explains this: thou art worthy, O Lord , to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and FOR "THY PLEASURE" THEY ARE AND WERE CREATED.
The Ten commandments were not meant to resitrict our lives but to free us. for every commandment broken there is a consiquence of pain not only for the one who broke it but also for the victim of the broken commandment. see it's not just all about us, there are others to consider when we sin. sin is painfull, if we do not sin, we do not suffer, when we obey Gods commands, we give him Joy, and as a result we get joy John 15:10-11 says the following: 10If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. 11I have told you this so that MY JOY MAY BE IN YOU and that YOUR JOY MAY BE COMPLETE.
hope this helps

You are correct: the most important goal for the Christian is the knowledge of God. Jesus told us this himself: "This is eternal life, that they may know You."
Christianity is first and foremost relationship. Unfortunately, for many that truth is lost and it becomes a religion of do's and don't's...usually with more of the latter by far. I've been there and I was not a joyful believer; I was judgmental and self-righteous.
That life came up empty for me and there was something about Jesus' promise of abundant life that kept me seeking for more. It takes discipline and effort and vulnerability and gut-level honesty to draw close to God. Sometimes I choose to keep a distance. And it is much easier to follow rules and appear to be a good Christian than it is to seek Him with all your heart, mind, soul and strength. I don't pretend to be holier than anyone else...I'm not, I just want God's presence more than I want my own comfort.
Who is God? I have a double major and the second of the two is in Bible so I could describe the nature of God and give verses to support each attribute, but that would not answer it for you. So I will just say that for me God is the beginning and the end, the one who is, and who was, and who is to come.
How do I know that? Deep calls to deep...all I can say is that once I was broken and hopeless and now I am whole. God knows me - the real me that no one else sees. I believe that because it is my reality.
Your next 5 questions ; do I wonder about those? Heck yes!
I spent 3 hours pondering and discussing questions from my son along these lines just about a week ago. I thought my brain was going to explode. I am very curious. I cannot understand all these things but I cannot deny that God is very real in my life. So by faith I accept what I cannot see or fathom. I cannot begin to understand how this computer, internet, etc. works and yet here I sit, typing away, believing you'll be able to read my answer if you care to.
I know you are brilliant and this must sound so infantile to you.
Jesus mentioned that, too. The simplicity is a stumbling block to the wise and learned.
Why did He create...don't know all the reasons, but it is clear He desired to have relationship with us. Love.
Why the rules, etc.: for our own well-being. We are told many things that bring life and health and peace and others that bring death and destruction. And the truth of these is revealed everyday in our world and in our individual lives. I made a choice to sin last week and paid the consequences and will for many days to come.
I don't just talk about what God wants me to do.
This is too long already. Hope it gives at least a different perspective.

Ooh so many questions...keep it simple stupid, this is just a quote, but it makes sense...the answer is why don't you ask God these questions, maybe he will answer your questions...or better still read the Bible...who is man to question the works of the Lord, God always has a plan from the beginning to the end.

The nature of God, yes, but by knowing this, I know what He wants me to do. As far as the rest, I wouldn't be able to comprehend it.
