My doctor told me that if you get a flu or a cold it can overactivate your immune system to where you end up with allergies. Over time, your immune system will calm down again and allergies will go away again.

Constant exposure can trigger the immune system to finally say "enough" and see the offenders (like pollen, dust, etc) as a threat when they really are not. Allergies tend to get worse as you get older, unfortunately, as your immune system takes a beating.

To treat allergies without a doctor, I would try to avoid the offending source as best I could, take a shower before bed to get rid of pollen from outside, maybe buy some OTC claritin, and use some eye drops and saline nasal spray.

Your doctor could probably do more for you, though, and of course you shouldn't take any of this advice if you have adverse reactions to any of the meds I mentioned.

Good Luck. Allergies are miserable.

Allergies usually develop after your body is exposed to something foreign. Your body's immune system does what it can to either destroy, remove, or quarantine the foreign body. Your body remembers what it did to defeat the foreign body and will do the exact same thing next time. Sometimes your body over reacts to things and creates way to much histamine (which is the true culprit to allergy symptoms) So now, every time your body id exposed to that substance, you have the allergic reaction.

The older you get, the more things you are exposed to, so the more likely you are to develop allergies. This is especially true if you move to a new region with different types of plants and insects.

I am the same age as you, and have the same problem. I was told by my doctor, that our bodies change every 7 years. What may have never been an issue before, can become one in some people. Allergy meds are the best.

They say because of the way the weather has been the last few years people that never had allergies or asthma are getting them; and people that already have them are getting them worse.

As age advances hormone production specially corticosteroid production is diminished and so allergic reactions become more frequent and severe.
