I can't answer most of your questions because (and no, I'm not one of those when you read this ) I havn't spanked my child since she was 4-5. She's 10 now and is rarely "grounded". All children are different and maybe I am lucky but my daughter knows by the look on my face that she is not only in trouble but mainly that she has dissapointed me. Certain things are taken away - ex. no video games, no computer, no tv, no friends over next weekend. As soon as my daughter was old enough (5) to realize a verbal punishment, I went with that and stuck with it because it works. Maybe that type of punishment is easier for me, I'm a single parent and have been since she was 3. I'm all she's got and she doesn't want to toss her attitude around for too long. When she see's that I'm mad, she staightens up pretty quick.

By the time the teen years get there the child should already know right from wrong. On the occasion that he/she forgets. I don't think a spanking will help.Talking and grounding or taking away privileges are more appropriate. I also think that making them responsible for their actions is always a good thing no matter what age they are. In life there will always be consequences for their choices, best to learn that from someone that loves you.

I think I was 13 or 14. My brother and I were sent upstairs to clean our rooms, but all we did was rough-house. Our mother came flying up the stairs with paddle in hand and gave me a few sound strokes. She then threatened my older brother with it, but he just laughed and said no. It didn't have much effect on me, as she had lost her strength.
Grounding became a typical punishment after that, which was more painful because it lasted longer. Often times us kids *wanted* to be spanked as punishment because it would be done and over with, but our parents still chose grounding instead.
It depends on the child, and your community. Some schools still use spanking as punishment, and there are even some who still use it clear up into high-school! It depends on the offense!
Personally, I'd never spank a teenager because they could turn around and beat you up!
Children between the ages of two and four though, *once* in awhile, NEED a swift smack on the buttocks, as there is *no* reasoning with a young child, and lack of spanking causes them to grow up out of control, being selfish and snotty, rude, thoughtless, and unkind.
When *I* was school, there was a particular naughty boy, who got spanked practically everyday all the up into high-school and his senior year! He now owns his own business, and is a multi-millionaire!!!
In conclusion, it depends on the offense, and the child.

There are 2 positions in this debate that i think of are the two ignorant and incorrect headed: a million. all spanking, no remember how this is finished, is infant abuse. The is stupid. infant abuse is a legally defined term and see you later as spanking maintains to be criminal, this is not infant abuse. this is pointless, it could do extra harm than good, this is hypocritical, despite. notwithstanding this isn't any longer, with the help of definition, infant abuse. 2. Spanking is the only style of self-discipline, ergo in case you do no longer spank, for sure you have out of control childrens on condition that theres no opposite direction to self-discipline. despite in case you p.c. to spank or no longer, despite, yet whilst it grew to become into outlawed the following day and you probably did no longer have the alternative and you ought to no longer be certain an sensible option, then you suck at this finished parenting difficulty. All appearances to the choice aside, maximum folk are clever adequate to be certain by way of ridiculous extremes.

Any age is too old to spank a child. All that does is teach the child that hitting another person is an okay way to control their behavior. There are other forms of punishment to use when children misbehave such as time out, no TV or friends over, no computer, no outside play, etc. Raising a child takes a great effort and much thought; spanking is the "easy" way out and is completely ineffective.

There is a lot of controversy about spanking children. I can only speak for myself of course. I cannot think of a time in a child's life when they should be spanked. What the hell message is sent when the person who is supposed to love you the most and protect you from everything is hitting you. Never understood the logic.

I was in 8th grade and I got an F and a D on my report card. My sis had a couple D's as well. so our dad said we were grounded and had to get spanked with the belt. My sister went first and came out of the other room with a couple tears in her eyes. she said "it doesn't even hurt" under her breath. It was my turn and He really tried to spank me hard. Like 7 or 8 times. I started cracking up. it didn't hurt at all. He was so mad.
Now days parents are not aloud to hit children/teens in anyway. Some kids need it. But there are plenty of ways to punish a teen with out being physical.

A teen? You're kidding. If you are getting spanked by your parents and you are a teen, that is abuse and you should call the authorities or the police. If you are spanking YOUR teen and are asking this question, then you need serious PARENTING CLASSES immediately, and someone should call the authorities on YOU.

Magic term, TEEN, I don't think a teen should be treated like a child and spanked.

When he's old enough to no longer throw tantrums. Pain usually only works on younger children, for older kids it tends to make them more angry. When they're young spankings are fine, but for older kids you should take away things that give them much entertainment, gratification and/or pleasure. Namely computers, game consoles, cellphones or anything else they enjoy very much. Also if they dont have a job cutting off money works well.
