I can't believe all the ppl on here that say their very painful...i've had 5 root canals and didn't have any pain, not even any minor discomfort, with any of them...i suppose ppl are diff. but i'm a super huge wuss when it comes to the dentist due to 2 very bad dental experiences when I was a young child. Anyway, the sound of the words "root canal" just plain sounds bad...lol...but if you go to a good dentist or even one that specializes in root canals, it should be a breeze....good luck !!

They are not suppose to hurt at all. People who experience pain when have a root canal (endo) done often waited too long to get to the dentist to have it taken care of and now the tooth is very infected and something had to be done right away. If the tooth has an infection that has flared up will have a heck of a lot trouble getting numb and staying that way. If you had an infection and had a round or two of antibiotics then getting numb should be a breeze. I've assisted in hundreds of endos and for the most part, it looks like the worst part is staying open that long and how boring they can be. Many of my patients fall asleep while were doing a root canal. Hope this answers your questions.

I don't know who you talked to. Good Lord, did my root canal hurt! Maybe I went to the wrong guy, but my parents have also had root canals and theirs really hurt, too. My jaw was so sore from that dentist drilling and shoving those poky needle-things (looked kinda like fishhooks) in my roots...I could barely open my jaw for a week. Not to freak you out or whatever...but I think somebody's pulling your leg. The root canal doesn't really hurt while you're anesthetized, no. You'll be numb and it'll feel weird, like, a lot of pressure and drooling and all, but it won't hurt. It'll hurt afterwards, though. Get an ice pack, get good meds, and prepare for some serious soreness after the numbness wears off. The injection is the least of your problems. But really, at least you won't have the surprise of all the pain to scare you if you know about it ahead of time. You'll be a little better prepared if you know the pain's coming. Go get the root canal and join the rest of us.

The pain people refer to is the infection itself and the pressure that is built up from the pus etc that is there. A root canal isn't that bad at all. It's cleaning out the canals that the roots are in. They put medicine in it and put some restorative material on it.

The best thing is prevention, prevent it from getting so decayed and infected!

I agree with Justine and Nebula. I always say that root canals and wisdom teeth are like teenagers. Nine out of ten are no problem. You only hear about the bad ones.

They are not really supposed to be but when I had one, I was young and the dentist kept asking me if I could still feel it when he jabbed me with the needle in the gum, waiting for the anesthetic to kick in. I kept saying yes and he gave me more but eventually assumed I was saying it because I was scared and said 'No you can't, don't be silly' I felt EVERYTHING!!! I was screaming and crying and he kept saying I was over reacting. My mother did everything within her power to not punch him out! I'm sure you'll be fine though. Things have come a long way since then. It heals pretty fast too.

I'm a dentist.

They shouldn't hurt at all. Your doctor will make every effort to anesthetize the tooth thoroughly.

I perform them regularly. If ever my patients feel pain, I stop and give more anesthesia.

I've had 4. Not too bad with novocaine.

You just have to have two or three visits to get the job done. That's the bad part.

Good luck :0

I believe it depends on who does the job. I've had them in the past and was always referred to a specialist by my dentist. I never felt any pain. They also gave good pain medicine and antibiotic prescriptions for the aftercare.

The work itself isn't painful, but sometimes they swell up for a few days after, and that hurts a lot.
