It's assumed that Joseph had already died before Jesus, because on the cross Jesus told his disciple John to look after Mary, his mother.
So that answers your other question too.

According to Ann Catherine Emmerick, a mystic whose writings are approved by the Church, Joseph, the Foster Father of Jesus died of old age and he had arthritis. He was already very old when Jesus was born. Mary, the mother of the Christ was only about 14 when she married Joseph. She lived to be about 60 years old and was assumed into Heaven. At first she lived in the home of John. Then later she spent much time in a cloister with some of the other Holy women (I think including the wife of Pontius Pilate) who were present at the Crucifixion. After being burried in a tomb (a walk-in) tomb, St. Thomas who had been away when she "fell asleep" came to see her remains. The other apostles lead him to the tomb and they found not her body, but lilies growing in it's place. Although the bible does not actually state that she was assumed into Heaven it is part of Sacred Tradition that dates back to the time she lived. And of course every Christian knows that this is possible since Enoch and Elijah were both taken up into Heaven alive.

There are no records of what happened to either of them in scripture but it is known that Joseph died before Jesus' death and Mary lived after His death but nothing is said about what happened to her after Jesus died other than that John was to take care of her. No one knows where she was buried or for that matter where Joseph was buried.

The bible is silent on Joseph after Jesus' 12th birthday. Tradition say that he died in an accident while working on a public building in Jerusalem. Jim

from what i remember in RE lessons Mary later ascended into heaven, either bodily or spiritually depending on whether your Catholic or Anglican. Joseph's presence isnt recorded after Jesus' 12th birthday. incidentally Joe is in fact patron saint of anti communism, amongst many other patronages!

According to the Urantia Book, if I remember correctly, Joseph, the carpenter, was building a wall, and it fell on him, killing him. I can't remember if this was while Jesus was still alive, or not. Sorry. Bad memory.

Mt 1:16-24
16
Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Messiah.
17
Thus the total number of generations from Abraham to David is fourteen generations; from David to the Babylonian exile, fourteen generations; from the Babylonian exile to the Messiah, fourteen generations. 5
18
6 Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, 7 but before they lived together, she was found with child through the holy Spirit.
19
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, 8 yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly.
20
Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord 9 appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.
21
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, 10 because he will save his people from their sins."
22
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
23
11 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means "God is with us."
24
When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.
25
He had no relations with her until she bore a son, 12 and he named him Jesus.
mt 2:13-19
13
6 When they had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, 7 and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him."
14
Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt.
15
8 He stayed there until the death of Herod, that what the Lord had said through the prophet might be fulfilled, "Out of Egypt I called my son."
16
When Herod realized that he had been deceived by the magi, he became furious. He ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had ascertained from the magi.
17
Then was fulfilled what had been said through Jeremiah the prophet:
18
9 "A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be consoled, since they were no more."
19
When Herod had died, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt
lk 1:27
27
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary.
John 1:45 (New International Version)
45Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."
