There are a lot of hazards with getting an epidural or spinal. If you are worried talk to your doctor and see if they can set up a time for you to meet one of the anethesiologists in advance before you go into labor (or your water breaks). I highly recommend these services because I would not have been awake for the birth of my children otherwise (they were all born by ER C-Section).

It is possible, but the chances are something like 1 in a billion. Millions of women in this country give birth with the help of an epidural with no more complications than a slightly sore back for a few days.

I was very concerned about the possibility of paralysis and did not want to get an epidural when I had my baby. However, my doctor (a well-respected and prominent doctor in NYC) assured me that the risk is insignificant. (And the relief I felt was completely worth it, in the end.)

Just because you move, you will not become paralized. It is not actually a needle that is inserted, but a very small tube, about the thickness of fishing line. They tape it down very well so that while you're in labor and pushing and pulling on it, it will not move, so don't worry! Also, they do not actually insert it into your spinal column (like in a spinal tap) but rather the liquid of your spinal cord. There is no reason for that to cause any permanent damage and you can move and rest on it with no problems.

The risk of something major happening (permanent paralysis, partial paralysis, numbness for the rest of your life, etc.) are incredibly minute, and almost never happen. One thing you need to be certain of is that you do remain perfectly still, and if you have a contraction as the anesthesiologist is inserting the epidural, tell him (assuming the nurse doesn't notice it on your monitor).

yes it is true, that is why the doctors tell you to be very still, when they are giving you the epidural. but don't worry to much because it is very rare. in the end you will be happy that you received the epidural.

It is true...just make sure to be very still while the procedure is being done. Also make sure to have it done in between contractions. Your body will be settled for a bit, long enough to get the needle in and out. Take a nice breath in and try to relax. I know it will be hard to do. If it takes longer, let the doctor know if you start another contraction, he/she will stop to let your contraction pass. Good Luck!

Anything that goes into the spine has risks but it really is a minuscule risk so if you feel that epidural is for you go ahead.

They require you to be very still. You can become paralized yes. Because it is going into your spinal column.

it can cause damage but the chances of that happening are slim just do exactly what they tell you to do and you will be fine. they know what they are doing i have had two of them and i was fine right after both of them. talk to your doctor they can give you more details about the risks and how the procedure is done. good luck
