you actually pay the tax from the state you live in, some states, the dealership is able to collect the tax and others you will have to pay the tax on the car when you get your plates.

Transport? do you plan on having it shipped or are you going to drive it back?

shipping will cost you anywhere from 500 to 1000 depending on how you have it shipped.

If you drive it you can get a driveaway sticker which in Illinois is $7.

I live in Illinois and usually buy my cars in Wisconsin.

As I live in the state of Illinois and the intent of the purchase (the car) is for use in Illinois, the state of Wisconsin can not collect sales tax on the purchase. I believe this is pretty much a standard law where if a purchase is made across state lines, as long as the purchase is to be used in a different state, the state you buy the product in does not have the right to collect sales tax (hense, why internet purchases made across state lines to not charge sales tax). In every state I have lived, it is your responsibility to pay the sales tax when you file your state income taxes.

What happens in Illinois is that unless you can provide proof that sales tax was paid on the vehicle, you have to pay it at your local rate when you register it. Wisconsin has cheaper sales tax than IL, so I have even tried to pay the sales tax in Wisconsin to avoil paying it in Illinois, but the dealer won't collect on it.

So do you save money? Not really. At least for me, rather than the tax being tied in with the loan, I have to pay the sales tax all at once when I register the car (which can sting at 7.5%).

Cheers

It all depends on the tax percentage of the state. For example, Georgia is 7% and other states are hihger or lower. Also sometimes your state's DMV has a fee for chancing the title over to your state, it is usually no more than $20.
