I'm probably blastpheming to a lot of people - but I honestly don't believe we do, however I wanted to ask a wider audience.

Why can't we just believe in ourselves and find our own centre or harmony to get through life? Why can't we just rely upon our friends and our families? - instead of a book that we even don't really know is true or not. By book I mean the Bible, Koran and other religeous texts which all claim to be from the one true God (how many one true Gods are there?).

If there is a 'one true God' - wouldn't he be happy we lived our lives within the laws of society and that we found ourselves and could all live in harmony rather than the "follow me or be damned to hell" approach; with the typical repent clause for your deathbed for instant salvation.

This post is not intended to offend or insult anyone and I respect each individuals views on religion. I'm just curious myself to what other peoples take on this are; both for and against.

Jesus said he would make fishes of men - Fish sleep with their eyes open, so do followers...

Not all people are endowed with the power to cope with their own thoughts. They need the control of such establishments in order to get through their mundane day-to-day life without losing all hope/faith and going axe-happy...

So in short - Please leave the people that are not ready to be unplugged from the Matrix in bliss.

Yes we need God!!! Depending on the person you ask...of course you will get different answers...mainly I feel is b/c it is a cultural issue in some religions...how ANY of us were raised... Whether we believe in the Bible, Koran, or other religious texts. I feel we should, and are for the most part, believe in the choice of religion and "God" in what we believe to be the higher power. I truly believe that as a whole we believe in the same God, of course there are poeple that would disagree with me. Some people say God or Allah or some other reference. And I believe even with all religions we should be able to be harmonious, but we are ALL HUMAN, and we are simply made, "NOT PERFECT" therefore there is good and bad in very walk of life. It truly does not mean there is, or should be Any one specific religion that is better or worse than the other. And regardless of whatever religion, or whether someone believes in God or religion, we ALL shall see some day...
~Peace~

I think that we have always needed God in our lives, but I honstly believe that now more than ever ESPECIALLY in todays society that we do need God.
If we tried to go our own way or believe in ourselves, then we would be in alot more trouble than we already are. There would be more confusion as to who is right and who is wrong therefore causing more trouble and more fighting amond ourselves. I think that this would cause some of us to be afraid to speak our opinion in fear that we would be approached by someone with the opposite opinion or be killed. If this happened, then the ammendment which states we have the right to the freedom of speech might as well be erased.
In the Bible, it says that all things happen for a reason. It is hard to understand how something good can come from some things such as the terrorist attacks that happened on 9/11. I myself have yet to see that good that may come from that, but I have put my life in Gods hands and I believe that he has a reason. We just have to trust in him and soon we will know that answers to all the questions and all our doubts will be reconciled.
I hope that this does not offend anyone. It is just what I think.

Why do people confine God to religion?

God is outside of religion, he was there before 'man' put a name on the box with which to hold him in.

Jesus Christ (God) is the only truth, he is the only thing that gives meaning to a decaying world and if you properly grasp that and not listen to the stereotypical description of Christianity then you would realise that for yourself.

He is the centre of the universe, he created all there is and he sustains us. He wants to have a relationship with us - how amazing is that!

Of course we need him, without him there would be no point in anything at all!

But would we have the society that we have if people didn't believe in god? Society would go amuck if there was nothing saying, there will be consequences to doing this, that or this. The belief that there is a god, holds people back, keeps most from doing a lot of things that would not be good. They need to have some kind of idol or god giving them a way of life to follow.

If an individual has a need for a god in his/her life that is a matter of personal choice/necessity. The rise in fundamentalism over the last 100 years tho' is a blight on society. To take scriptures literally and apply them to modern life creates obvious conflicts between people and cultures. Until fairly recent times, the scriptures were treated (for the most part) as allegorical and interpretive. The publishing of The Fundamentals in the USA at the turn of the last century gave rise to the rigid and unswerving attitude of fundamentalist ideology in the application of the scriptures to modern life. Now we have a situation in the world where nation states use fundamentalism to guide their sociopolitical thinking, none more so than the USA under the presidency of George Bush. This is scary stuff for anybody with liberal attitudes and a secularist point of view. The belief by people that as a nation they are preferred by god or that their lands are theirs by divine right is and does create polarisation of people who have more in common than their social religiosity allows them to realise. We do not need any god to guide our societies if we as individuals have an innate sensitivity to humanity.

We do need god in our lives as this world is a complete mess .Man will never solve the problems we are facing just now
e.g Terrorism ,Famine, Wars. The devil is ruling the earth just now REV 12:9. but in verse 12 it shows that he has only a short period of time him knowing himself that soon god will soon intervene. We all need hope for the future and no man can give us that so it must be from a higher source of intelligence . Psalm 83:18

Well, my answer is yes we need...
You should know that there is a great deal of interpretation in religion especially with regart to the texts.
I remeber the sociologist Berger came in our University, and he talked about secularism. The facts are those who think modern times are secular are a very small group inside western society that come from universities. The largest part of human population cannot imagine a totally secular society. Can we really force them to accept lack of religion as a cult?
I have experience in a communist society and they tried to make exactly this! the results were catasrophic!

I do. Because I am not able to think about living without a purpose. If we shall not have another "life" when we die, what are we doing here? Wouldn't it be more easy to suicide now, instead of waiting for the death. I believe that religion is a support, without it we accept our "lack of soul" and our "mortality." And it is not nice, since we are always trying to get eternity. If death was something natural for us, we would not have to create medicines to fight it off.
