Social scientists did a study and found out that teenagers have a limited capability to consider their actions, outside of themselves, while adults, consider what they want for themselves, and how it will affect others around them.
This is called "maturity" and it's valid. Today's culture says "do what you want" and "do what feels good", "don't let others tell you what to do", etc.
It's YOUR job to consider others, but not to let it be an end-all to your decision making ability.
Typically, if you consider others too much, it's probably from low self-esteem.
Work on it.

Part of it comes with age. Part of it comes from knowing deep down inside you that you are a good, worthwhile, valuable, lovable person. There are a lot of turkeys out there who don't, won't, or can't realize that and it's useless to waste emotional energy trying to please them--they can't be pleased no matter how hard you try.

It's very easy for me. I simply recognize that what other people think, do or say is for other people to think, do or say. Do I want to be like other people? No, I do not. I'd like to think I can think better, do better & say better than other people because other people are usually a big disappointment to me and other people. Other people don't like what I like, don't do what I do & don't care about me as much as I care about me. I know I'm a very self centered & selfish person. I know other people are very self centered & selfish people. The big difference is that I'm not ashamed of being self centered & selfish & many other people are ashamed of themselves but they dislike me more than they are ashamed. The irony is that they are not ashamed of disliking me so I'm not ashamed of disliking them. Hence, I dislike them for disliking me & reinforce my commitment to myself. But it's all in a 'good' way. It's called perfect mal-adjustment in a sick society. Bobby McFerran says it best: "Don't Worry, Be Happy!" Lemme have anutta drink! ;-] +2!

I only consider what others think of me when there's a consequence involved. I won't totally demolish my reputation with foolish behaviour, but i won't do things that effect my personal life just because others think i need too. In that sense i don't care what people think of me.

Anyone who claims not to care what anyone else thinks about them is either a liar or has a mental problem. It's normal to be self-conscious. Just don't let it rule you.
