How does an automatic waffle maker "know" when a waffle is done?

I recently read where there is a 'steam' sensor to help w/ when the waffles are done. The more the steam emits means the waffle isnt fully complete and vice versa.

Then there is the 'timer' as the 1st poster mentioned.

It is simply on a timer.
