Dr. Criag Smith in Atlanta yrs ago gave me a root canal and crown.I now have major infections because the crown was not secure. My problem, I have a whole in my Jaw Bone. I work for myself and cannot afford the sugery. I reached out to him and he was very cold and not helpful. He no longer works at the location were the procedure was done. The dentist office(original location) gave me the vibe that he was ask to leave and they were more than helpful to me finding his new location. I don't want this to happen to another patient.

First of all, don't listen to Nebula D and Maire N. One is a money hungry dentist and the other is a disgruntled patient. Here is to Maire N: Those websites have no legal rights and all their evidence are inaccurate and makeup. Stop telling people that dentists are bad just because you had a bad experience. And what the heck is with "remove root canals" --> if you have a common dental knowledge, it means extractions and no tooth. Then you cannot eat! And mercury.. go to MEdline... tons of paper will show you that amalgam is safe (ADA, FDA website.. they are government site at US.. not some UK site)

So here is what you can do. File a complaint to the dental association at the state. And PEER VIEW will help you to get your money back. It's usually free and make you talk to the dentist.

Rotsa Ruck. With any luck, Dr. Smith will not catch wind of your libelous statements made in public on Yahoo! and he will not consider suing you. Idiot. You could have asked the same question without assaulting him in public.

You will never be able to prove that he did substandard work "years ago" that led to your current problems.

I don't know what surgery you are facing, but attempting a lawsuit against the dentist will cost you more than the surgery, so just get it fixed. In the future, take some responsibility for continuing care. Go back for regular check-ups. Prevent major problems before they get out of hand.

I doubt you would find a lawyer to take your case, since they would work on contingency and nobody would ever expect to win this one.

I'm a dentist.

First of all, your statement sounds like absolute horsesh*t.

You don't get an infection because of a crown not being secure. You get an infection because of a root canal failing. And you know what? Root canals sometimes fail. You know what else? Crowns sometimes fail. You did mention that Dr. Smith did this work "years ago." A crown that isn't secure would fall out within days, not years.

Sounds to me like you're pissed off about the fact that you paid a lot of money for a treatment that ultimately failed, and even more pissed off about the fact that the doctor didn't bend over backwards to do do exactly what you want ("very cold and not helpful", as you so deftly put it), and now you want to raise hell for him.

Let me clue you in on something: If you think that the authorities in your state are by default going to be on your side of the issue, you are wrong. Dental boards get hundreds of complaints from disgruntled patients like you making malpractice claims that reek of ignorance and bitterness. Moreover, do you know who sits on these dental boards? Dentists, most of whom have had to deal with disgruntled patients looking to raise hell. They are not, I can assure you, going to roll over and take your side. They are going to examine the issue carefully, and they are going to examine YOU carefully for factors that could have caused the failure. (I'm guessing that the inside of your mouth is dirtier than a sewer.) Even if they don't find any, chances are they still will not blame this dentist because sometimes therapies fail even when done properly and within the standard of care.

So, if you want to file a complaint, file a complaint. It is highly unlikely that it will get you anywhere. If you want to spend oodles of money on a lawyer, go right ahead. Keep in mind that the doctor almost certainly has more money to spend on a lawyer than you do. In court, he will have dentists (generalists and specialists) testifying for him, and unless he did something that was outside of what most dentists would consider standard clinical practice, he is going to win the case and you will be a few thousand dollars poorer. I can assure you, if I were ever called to testify in such a case, I would have to see something really bad on the part of the doctor to testify against him.

Think of it this way, the thousands of dollars you'd spend on your unsuccessful lawsuit would be better used for dental treatment.

Hi, I would recommend you to consult the website iaomt.com and mercuryfree.co.uk. Also if you google "rootcanal" you'll find lots of info and in particular I'd recommend you to read the rfesult of 7 years of research into the effects on the body of root canal treatment carried our by a Dr Weston in the early 20th century. He discovered that bacteria and toxins generated from devitalised or dead teeth left in situ cause local infections in other organs of the body and lead to all kinds of chronic conditions in the long term ranging from heart disease to neuro muscular disorders, alzhimers, kidney and liver damage. His research results were buried for years but now a renewed interest is being taken in his work by dentists such as Dr Meinig and others. I personally have mercury and root canal treatments and I suffer from fibromialgia. I intend to have all my mercury and root canals removed ASAP I have located a dentist in Dublin who does such work because he is convinced of the negative side effects of such treatments. If you do go down this route make sure you go to a dentist who knows how to remove root canals and mercury as the toxins given off during romoval are very dangerous and so they need to be removed using a very specific technique in order to protect the patient from ingesing them.
I will also consider suing the dentists responsible for these treatments because I was never warned of the possible long-term effects of these. I will consider suing not for the money but to highlight the problem and draw public attentio to it here in Ireland.
Good luck and I hope you find this info helpful even if a little scary. Maire

A crown not secure years later? Did you go for regular checkup where loosening would have been detected. You have no case against this dentist.

It is probably too late to prove that his work was substandard.
You would probably waste all your money filing a suit against him, which would be dissmised on lack of evidence.

if you didn't go in for regular cleanings and get things checked out, then they couldn't have caught the loose crown and fixed it.

Regular maintenance on your teeth and gums are a MUST.
