I am very conscious that there is a real discrimination against the obese in our society and that many feel that they can be hurtful and humiliate these people as though being fat gives them less human value than others who are more fit. Many skinnier people are not skinny because of anything they do better, but because they are just "that way". Well, the same can be said for some fat people.

Now, having said that, most heavy people are the way they are because of lifestyle. In many cases it is a case of lack of knowledge of fitness and nutrition or they are following a way of life that was taught to them as children.

Then again, some are depressed and find solace and comfort in food, which may be the only thing they can depend on.

Some get to the point of, oh, why bother?

I think that every attempt to get healthier should be encouraged and applauded.

If you think that lecturing a fat person will have any positive effect whatsoever, you are sadly mistaken. It will do nothing more than humiliate a person and send them running home to their cola and chips and cake, for further comfort.

I would encourage people to be respectful and compassionate towards EVERY other person, and not feel the need to humiliate someone because they are different in any way. It seems that obesity is one of the most prevalent forms of discrimination left that society feels is acceptable.

Just look at the cover of magazines, picking on fat stars, or alternatively, stick thin ones. As a society we seem to feel comfortable judging people based on their bodies. Everyone has feelings and everyone is a valuable human being, no matter what they look like. The attractive and fit do NOT have any more value than the unfit or unattractive. Everyone has something to offer.

Wow...this turned into a bit of rant, didnt' it? :) Peace!

obesity can be a genetic, mental, emotional, hormonal, or physical issue (Or combination of any of those) Its hard to point just one finger at one source.

As for genetics, this is more rare, but it's out there. There are people, like me for instance, who are born with a larger frame. I will never be a size 2, ever, and I've accepted that but I keep physically active (walk three miles a day) and I eat healthy. For other people they may have a glandular problem that is inherited.

As for the mental/emotional issues, there are good therapists out there who can help people to overcome childhood issues, etc. There are antidepressants out on the market as well. I think a lot of people eat out of bordom, to comfort themselves or to feel good in one way or another. It can become a habit or addiction like anything else.

As for hormones, if there is an estrogen dominance that can make one gain weight. I'm still doing some research on this myself. It's interesting reading, that's for sure.

Physically, a lot of people aren't getting up to walk. The body is made to walk, daily. Instead, people are doing online gamine, watching tv, or whatever, not moving around as much. There isn't anything wrong with gaming or tv, but within reason! Too much of a good thing can be harmful at times. There are *some* people who are just lazy but I think some of that has to do with some emotional/mental issues.

It's very sad. I wonder about the mindset of people in this situation, because I was there 25 lbs ago. I still have more to go, but at that time I felt pretty bad about myself. If my skinny son wanted it, I would go through the drivethrough, get him what he wanted and move on. Didn't want the humiliation of trying to slide in the booth or publically eat feeling guilty. I didn't want salad. It has yet to be seen as a addiction except in small circles, but it is and should be dealt with as such. The problem of course is that food is necessary to us while drugs, alcohol, and tobacco aren't. Different addiction, but that all the same.

I think they are people just like me with a medical issue. I don't like to judge people, and especially just by how they look. You never really know what kind of problems they might have.

I don't feel sorry for overweight people, but I do feel concern. I hope they would make choices to help their obesity but that is their choice. If they need encouragement I would gladly encourage but I think nagging someone about their weight is useless. The power has to come from inside of them.

I find it sad and sometimes even disgusting that so many people are fat. Even small children weigh much more than I do (I am 17). I am overweight and I think that being overweight protects you from many illnesses. I'm not the only one who claims this. I read in the newspapers that latest medical search results are that we should dicrease our calorie intake (about 1000 calories) and be careful about what we are eating, so that we get all the nutritients we need. Of course, when I mean overweight I do not mean so-skinny-that-I-will-die. Just thin. That's how we should be. Not only because it looks prettier but also because it's way better for your health.

i wholeheartedly agree with you. i believe that obesity is a very serious symptom that starts in childhood. if you have ever looked at the maury povitch show, you will see how the parents coddle their children and let them eat whatever they want. the parents do not think there is anything wrong with it, and almost act as if they are feeding their child out of love. i guess, it must be generational. like maybe their parents treated them that way. they just are not thinking that they are harming their child, and thus helping their child to grow up and become obese.

I only feel bad if there is a medical reason for them to be that way, such as they are handicap and can not exercise. Other wise they did it to themselves. If there is no medical reason they can't lose weight they need to get up and walk and change their eating habits so they can live to see their children's future. Also with the gastric bypass surgeries they could lose a lot of weight and start a healthy life.

I have a friend like that. I'm sure it's not in her genes but she just loves to eat a lot. I pity her but most of the time, I'm annoyed by her habit. I feel sad for people who suffer from obesity but I dislike and want to mock people who are fat just because they are too greedy. Obesity is a health problem, it's far different from just being fat. Those fat people don't have my respect because they don't care at all on their appearance.

It's good to bring the kids once in a while to McDonalds, so they could enjoy and at least, not being deprived. But must educate them that it's not healthy to eat from fast food often.
