I think this is a big mistake we are making...I understand the safety precautions, but should we at least give these people a right to a far trial....I think this is the same mentality that happened in WW2 and the Japanese internment camps!! What a sad part of American history that was that seems to be repeating itself all over again..What will we say to our grandchildren when they ask what we did about this??

Fred...

The internment camps where set up to kep sthose people of japanese desent monitored. They were thought to all be spies based on thier heritage and values. he same can be said for the GB prisoners...without the right to a trial, how do we know if we have the right person...this is not justice? This is not the pronciples America was founded on. Far be it from this administration to go above the laws we have established in the name of national seciurity, we have due process in this country. These prisoners deserve at least a trail!!

I think many of us have no idea what is really going on there...60% of the people in gitmo were captured on the basis of suspected terrorism. We can not do that....you can not have a big brother tyoe attitude, this is a road we can not walk down...

This is much different from WWII or we'd be out rounding up whole families of middle eastern descent and hiding them away somewhere.
The men at GITMO are considered enemy combatants by the US as defined by the Geneva Convention. As such they can be confined to a POW camp for the duration of hostilities. In addition the US says they are being charged with the crime of terrorism. The administration's contention is that since they are combatants (soldiers or military) that they are subject to military justice and as such should be tried before this military tribunal that congress and the court system have stood in the way of. My answer is probably over simplified but thats the way I understand it.

the difference is that those held in gitmo where captured on the battle field and are enemy combatants. If that happened in WW2 and them not being in uniform they would have been shot as spies and saboteurs. They are being treated better than any of the prisoners they captured. as for a trial is should be a milatry tribunal since there are considered POW's but can't be offically called that. I wish my dad who is in a nursing home because of the damage caused by a stoke got the treatment they get. He would be better off. At leat he would get good medical care and the therpy he needs. but the government doesn't have the money for him they have rebuid the rest of the world and screw the american people.

I think there is a difference between what we are doing at Guantanamo and what we did at the WW2 Internment camps.

During WW2 we "suspected' that people of Japanese, German and Italian heritage might be working against the interests of the USA, so we segregated them. At Guantanamo we have prisoners that we captured and who "were" fighting against us.

We KNOW the guantanamo group are enemies.

These are two different classes of people and should be handled differently.

The people at Guantanamo want to destroy America and kill all Americans. The Japanese in the camps were American citizens, how can you compare the two?
