Several reasons.
The first is sugar.
The second is that by drinking soft drinks, you cause yourself to drink less pure water, which is necessary for internal hygiene.
The wrst drinks you can have are the diet varieties because they contain aspartame as a sweetener. This is poisonous, and was originally developed to kill ants.
Avoid sodas - save money and drink water.

Okay, you've gotten answers varying all over the place. Now what you need to do is learn how to find out the truth without all these "opinions". Taking in too many calories whether it be sugar or carbohydrates and having a sedentary lifestyle WILL cause diabetes (type 2), particularly if you have a genetic predisposition for it. Here's a nice source of info on diabetes:

well first off it has tons of sugar!! I tell my kids at work it's nothing but liquid candy. But that alone doesnt give you diabetes it also has to do with what you eat. Eating fast foods alot can also cause it. That is why so many youth are getting it because most food has sugar and fat in it. Back in the dayz most families eat dinner at home but in today's fast pace world it's more convient to eat out. So soda has a part but not a huge part it also goes with food and the lack of exercise. THink about it..what do kids get as exerciese?? A game control and a tv. Even the school districts only allow at least 30 minutes of free play and a child needs at least an hour.

Good grief! Soft drinks do not cause diabetes. Diabetes is the body's inability to process carbohydrates properly. Type 1 is when your pancreas doesn't produce insulin and Type 2 is when your body produces insulin but your body cannot use it effectively. Any type of carbohydrates will affect your blood sugar and diabetics are no longer restricted in the not having sugar department, they must learn to modify and control their carbohydrate intake no matter what the source.

A study published in 2005 did say that DRINKING TOO MUCH SODA CAN CAUSE DIABETES - TYPE II. The reason is NOT the sugar in soda.
The reason is that people who drink a lot of soda tend to be overweight. The more overweight a person is the higher their likelihood of developing Type II diabetes.
There is NO relation between drinking soda and getting Type I.

This is for the person who says soft drinks don't cause diabetes, I say you are full of baloney. Just go into any health food store and buy some books about health. Today we have refined white sugar and it is destroying our health. According to the website below it lists 50 health problems associated with surgar and one of those is diabetes.
Another source of my info is the book "Sugar Blues" by william duffy, it's avialable at Amazon.com.

Soft drinks do not cause diabetes but they will make the diabetes much worst. The soda or fizz destroys your kidneys and if you drink the regular soda they have about 16 teaspoons of sugar per 1/2 cup! plus if you drink the dark (or black) sodas like Coke or Pepsi they will also kill your kidneys because of the black cola in them also there is a report that they do lots of damage to the pancreas too.
Rootbeer & lemon/lime soda's do not have the damaging affect that black COLA's do, but drink them in moderation too.
