It's called your oxygen saturation level. It's the percentage of your red blood cells that are carrying oxygen at the time it's checked. Normal results are 93-100%.

It's your oxygen saturation level. The term "pulse ox" is the name of the machine because it measures both your pulse and oxygen level.

If you have an oxygen level in the low 90's or lower then your doctor should be prescribing or recommending ways to supplement your oxygen - which may include inhalers, oral medication, nebulizer treatments, oxygen or a combination thereof. If you have low oxygen levels while sleeping the doctor may recommend a CPAP or ByPAP machine, depending on the reason for the low oxygen, which can be used in with oxygen and in addition to the other potential treatments.

Its a pulse oximeter. It reads the oxygen saturation content of the red blood cells by infrared through the skin. It is SPO2, not PO2, which you obtain through an arterial blood gas.
You also CANNOT obtain pH through this!
It may not read correctly if the area where it is placed is cold, doesnt have good circulation, or in some cases poor lighting. Some say it wont read through nail polish, but I havent had that problem.
Also, I shudder to think that anyone is treating the numbers instead of the patient. Technology is totally infallible,so I certainly hope no one is taking a low saturation number on blind faith and instituting CPAP or intubation!!

It is called Oxygen saturation....

In medicine, oxygen saturation (SaO2) measures the percentage of hemoglobin binding sites in the bloodstream occupied by oxygen. At low partial pressures of oxygen, most hemoglobin is deoxygenated. At around 90% (the value varies according to the clinical context) oxygen saturation increases according to an S curve and approaches 100% at partial oxygen pressures of >10 kPa. A pulse oximeter relies on the light absorption characteristics of saturated hemoglobin to give an indication of oxygen saturation.

That is pulse oximetry. It measures the percentage of hemoglobin that are saturated with a gas, in theory oxygen but other gases like carbon monoxide can yield a high O2 sat as well. I am normally happy with readings in the mid to high 90's.

I concur with the other two posters. If you were moving around then it will read lower, however, unless you have lung problems, even if you've been moving around, it shouldn't be that low. Are you asthmatic? That would explain much. It should have read no lower than 96 or 97 if your moving around, unless you have lung issues. 97 to 100 is normal for health lungs. I would see a doctor and find out if you have asthma or bronchitis. Good luck.
