Insects are animals, and so insect products, such as honey, beeswax, propolis, bee pollen, royal jelly and venom are often not considered vegan. (Bees undergo cruel treatments and slaughter by the farming/manufacturing industry to produce those products.)

I've been a vegan for 18 years and I don't eat honey or buy honey. I don't eat any animal derived products and I don't wear wool, another animal derived product. This is the only product that I won't refuse to eat if I'm at another person's house. I'll refuse to eat anything else that comes from animals.

particular, the bees are not mistreated, besides the undeniable fact that the point is that vegans do not ANY animal products. yet truly, being vegan is about doing each thing that you'll. some vegans trust that ingesting honey is okay, and that is genuinely wonderful with me. it truly is only a own determination in accordance with values and the excuses for veganism - some people surely do it for health motives, besides.

Actually, some people do kill the bees after harvesting honey, some people don't, it really depends where the honey you're getting is from. Personally, I think that vegans should eat honey by companies that do not harm bees, because honey is oh so very healthy for you, your skin, your hair, your body in general. Of course it's also very yummy, and a wonderful replacement of sugar.

Of course bees are killed during the harvesting of honey. To think otherwise is purely ignorant. Plus, we're eating the food that the bees are making for themselves, not for us. Honey isn't something we need to survive, and there are plenty of tasty plant-based alternatives.

However, I personally agree with this article, which argues why honey IS okay to eat for those following a vegan diet/lifestyle.

What I disagree with is your assertion that bees are not harmed in the harvesting of honey. Of course they are.

OMG, did you open a can of worms!!... Irina C really laid it on THICKLY!! Wow!! I thought I was messed up.... Now I feel just fine, by comparison. Whoa, boy! Geeezzzz! How on earth could someone possibly come up with such a lengthy "rationale"? I use that term in quotes because the above answer is completely ludicrous and as far fetched as anything I've seen on Answers. By her definition I am most definitely NOT a vegan. I do eat a lot of vegetables, but include a little cheese, fish, and chicken. I don't eat that way because I'm vegetarian, though. I do it because I'm diabetic and I know what's good for me. If I didn't have a sugar intolerance, I wouldn't hesitate to eat honey. In fact, I think I'm going to go out and get a big, juicy New York steak tomorrow, barbeque it, and savor the heck out of it. Man alive, Irina Cs answer tops them all... by far. She oughta get best answer just for the sheer length of this one.

It depends on the vegan, but in the main part, no. Honey is an animal by product.

I hope you take the time to read all of Irina's answer. I read the whole thing (a long time ago, not on answers.) I also love how you seem angry that vegans don't eat honey. If there was nothing wrong with it, do you think we'd have a problem with it? No...such is mango

I think IRINA C's answer explains why most people consider vegans to be "a bit looney".

Especially the bits about slavery, and bees being bad for the environment. If they are that bad, why aren't vegans out there KILLING them? Ha!

Vegans don't want to depend on animals or even bees for anything, clothing, food, beauty products......and bees obviously made that honey, so it is in that category
